Slick tyres

  M3, Cup racer'd 182
Hi all
I was thinking off getting slicks for my wheels they are 17"

Ok I know some people will slate me for having 17".
But here is my problem what size is eqivelant to 205/40/17 in slicks dry/wets please?
Where is the best place to buy from new/used.

Thanks

You'll probalby need to stiffen up your drivetrain and suspension if you go down the route of slicks fella. With all that extra grip, something will go pop under load.

It may also be worth getting a set of old, used 15" rims, by the time you've bought 17's all round you'll have probably spent the same and your next set of slicks would cost less fresh 17's

I wouldnt buy second hand slicks personally as they deteriorate with how many heat cycles they have done and its not easy to tell just buy looking at them.

Whenever we have bought them we went through the manufacture.

I'm using customised cup racer suspension On my 182 so will be ok?. I've just spoken to nick172cup he said that with the suspension being so firm to get the most grip it might b worth looking into slicks.

I can't use 15" I've got 330mm 4pots.

Cheers

Didn't think about the heat cycles from a used tyre.

When you say go through the manufacture you mean phone Michelin/Dunlop direct?.

Are they expensive a corner and what size would I be looking at? I understand road tyre sizes from being a tyre fitter years ago but slicks baffle me lol

Cheers

They may be expensive, but that's to be expected, they're the opposite end of the spectrum to BlackCircles Ditchfinder Pro's.

;)

They are expensive yes. We were paying £400 a corner I think in the Xbow, not sure what size you will need tbh. Slicks are completely different to any road/track tyre, to get them up to temp u have to be aggressive and be prepared to slide the car a lot when they are cold.

We bought our slicks at circuit from the manufacture but we also had some delivered to the workshop from Avon and Dunlop.

In my opinion you only need slicks if you are racing & or a driver with an ability where you can explore the limits of the tyre. Being a slick it's only purpose is TRACK. Having extra grip can cause problems as above... For instance it'll be harder on your whole drivetrain/Wheelbearings/suspension for a start.

Oh sh*t £400 a corner bloody hell I wasn't expecting them to be that much I was hoping for £200-£250,

I think I'll leave the idea of slick then and back to the drawing board.

I've just been given a rough idea off how much these are going to cost thanks to Sam@BTM,
So i'm going to compromise on less grip for reliability off the car.
And go for 888's or other good track tyres.

Clio cup slick will be the right size and can be had for £30 a tyre part worn or around £200 new I've been running them for years

20/61/17 is the new size I think and the old size was 20/62/17 best places is eBay or any Clio cup team or the tyre supplier for the Clio cup which is protyre motorsport but they didn't have any last week and I'm with Sam if your race but for trackdays they work well for the price

Hi,
You can buy part worns for under £100 a set as they are touring car size(17s). However, you cannot use on most track days unless you have a Roll cage fitted. The extra loads on your car will certainly find any weaknesses in your suspension, bushes, etc. Also, you can experience "sump surge", where all the oil in your engine is thrown to one side, and it starves your oil pump. I don't know whether the Clio has a Baffled sump, which is what you need to overcome this.

Sounds like you should just go with 888's, unless you fancy a full drivetrain & suspension rebuild to hack the loads.

Maybe a baffled sump too?
