slicks

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
i know most of you will prob say get R888's, and i may well end up doing that

but other than those lucky people who have contact with race teams to get hold of slicks, is there anywhere on the net (or other) that i can order them from?

used or new, don't mind

15" btw

You don't want them. Especialy not for track days, its way too hard to keep the tyre temp up when every Tom, Dick and Harry is getting in your way. Spoils the day IMHO as you spent more time with cold slicks going slower than you do with warm slicks going fast.

Okay you can run a really, really soft compound so they heat up quick but then if you do get a couple of quick laps in they'll be pretty much gone.

Add to this you really need a slick specific suspension setup due to the lateral G you can pull on hot sticky slicks. Road type spring and damping rates will just see the car sat on the bump stops during hard cornering and you want to maintain some amount of compliance thats preferably outside of that provided by the bumpstop.

Check out the video of Martins williams...super sticky slicks and standard ish suspension....ended up on his roof/bonnet for quite a distance.

I had some part worn A048s and the grip was amazing especially compared to road tyres...pitty they are so expensive but you do get what you pay for I suppose.

  Turbos.
Most cars don't have the geo to work slicks properly, and the stress on other components is quite high, so unless its a track ready car... don't bother if they work out more than R888s or similar.

i had heard about increased stress levels on suspension and driveshafts when using slicks, and yes i suppose on a track day it will be hard to keep the temps up

so you would recommend going for a cut slick (dependant on compound) or something like R888's (or similar)

on my speedlines i have michelin pe2's (for general driving and really wet conditions) so i am after something that can be used on dry/damp days to provide loads of grip

some of the mk1 cup racer lads use slicks and seem to do ok, but then i'm not sure if the cup racers used uprated suspension/driveshafts to cope? obviously they were set up back in the day to use slicks so have an advantage over putting them on a road car?
