Sloppy Gear change

Hi the Clio has covered about 110k now and the change/linkage has started to get more play in it. I already have a yanoo kit fitted with a phase one knob. What others areas of the linkage wear and can you get new bushes for them ?

Cheers

Brass bushes in the bottom of the shifter rod and renewing the plastic bush gearbox pivot bush. The pivot arm wears to so that's worth a look too.
Failing that, it will be wear on the selector forks etc inside the box.
Tiny movement at these areas is amplified quite significantly by time it gets to the gearknob.

I think it’s done about 25-30k since the the yanoo 3 was fitted ( these have some adjustment?)

Is this pivot bush ? Or the one for the standard shifter

Viagra

Or as above. I got the brass bush Stiff shift 3 from Yanoo, not fitted it yet but apparently it makes the world of a difference

Yeah that’s what I’ve got fitted

I fitted a complete new gear shift lever/housing on mine, they are still available from Renault (or they were last year anyway) and it costs around £100.
I also replaced the pars mentioned above.
After that the gear shift action was pretty good.
When l got the Clio 182 it had a BMS shifter fitted which was a horrible thing, l put it on Ebay and got £200 for it which paid for all the OE shifter parts.

I fitted an aftermarket copy leather gear knob as the OE one was over £100 from Renault

The car did come with some spares including the original gear lever.
Sadly the old knob was damaged removing it, you have to knock it off the lever from underneath.
I used a ball joint remover and hammer, but it damaged the leather.

Hello

I've got a Clio 182 which has a nice gearshift as it is, however the gearstick is very low down so isn't the easiest to reach.

I've read a few different threads, many seem to run the stiff shift 3.0 from Yanoo but that it can be a tad too stiff. I understand I'd need to run the stiffer ball insert with with the stiff shift 3.0.

Would I need/benefit from the shorter shift and quickshifer that Yanoo sells in addition to the two above? Also would I be better opting for the normal stiff shift 1.0 rather than the 3.0?

Finally - I've read that a Scenic shifter can bring the gear lever higher but that it requires some bending otherwise it can foul the radio. Is this a hell of a lot of work to do? As much as I'd like the stick higher and closer, it's not the end of the world if it remains as it is.

Many thanks,

Marc

Hi mate,

Thanks for the message, does it improve the gearchange in your opinion? Have you gone for the uprated brass bush as well?

Struggling to find a Scenic shifter, can only find links to the 6 speed shifter online which is no good for me.

I am finally about to try and perfect the crispness of my gear change mechanism.

I have the Yanoo stiff shift 3 kit (http://www.dp-automotive.hu/) and a new Renault bush (7700872205 – about £5) for the connection at the gearbox end and from Yanoo “brass” bushes. All of this should remove all play/slop in the entire gearchange mechanism up to the gearbox.

Whilst I am doing this to make the change sharper, I would like to move the lever movement rearward as I’m 6ft4 and it’s a stretch to where it is as standard. The long rod/tube that runs under the car to the gearbox seems to have some length adjustment at the gearbox end and failing that I could cut out/weld say a cm from the length just before it connects to the in car gear lever. This would pivot the lever back a bit in the car – but any experience of how much I can move it before the reverse lock mechanism wont work?

Any other experience and idea for improving further? I dont want to go with the 3rd party complete replacement systems as they make too much racket.

I’m in the same similar boat as you. My car has the yanoo shift kit, but third gear is always a stretch, and I’ve also got a jon foz lowered seat subframe. Be good to know if their is a way of moving the shifter back a touch

I looked at the long rod under the car and that has a clamped sleeve at the front and wondered if moving this would do it - BUT I am told that you should leave this alone as it will mess up the gear engagement - so that isnt a solution.
