I've just bought myself the 400 kit and the 55-200 Tamron lens, I really hope that I get on ok with it. Otherwise look out for a Canon 400 on eBay soon!

You might get a Fuji S9500 within your budget or the S5600 for £140.

They are kind of halfway between a DSLR and a Compact.

You haven't got DSLR money unfortunately. The halfway house cameras are good, not up to DSLR standards but much better than many of the cheaper compacts. Also with the lens ranges etc you would have to pay a £800 to get a DSLR with that type of capability.

hmmm, i have got a fuji s7000 at the moment... great camera but was really looking at upgrading to the SLR... just wated something slightly more professional and with more potential... the S7K takes great pics never the less, but just fancy a change!!

Do you want a DSLR to show off and wave something expensive around in public (like half of buyers) or do you have a specific area where you find your current camera has a weakness?

Otherwise you may miss the live preview, ease of use and lense range once the novelty has worn off.

Also once you have spent £500 on a D400 many experienced photographers will tell you that you need to spend that much again on decent lense....

You'd get half a decent lens let alone a DSLR! :clown:

Unless you want to spend 4-5 times that I'd stick to a DSLR-a-like, something like the Canon S3 IS or a lumix Fz50 with 12x optical zoom.


So it seems you already have one!

Got a 350D and a Lumix FZ20 for portability and video. Can't really fault my Canon tho. Have you thought about getting a SLR style camera, like some of the Panasonics? Can't fault my Panasonic really either. The Leica lens is amazing. Just thinking about ur budget m8.

NO NO NO NO!!!!! Get either a Used canon 20D with sigma lenses, or a panasonic dmc-lx1..................... 400pound will get you a fookin dream!!!!
steer clear of the modern day slrs as there just jazzy compacts!! ( tiny sensors crammed with pixiels......will just give you a massive crap quality pic)......... av had an absoloute s**t load of consumer and pro slrs.......www.dpreview.com photographers bible!!!! every digi cam ever made with exampl e images...

also the lens is key with image quality, dont skimp!!!!

Don't agree with a lot of what you have to say m8. 20D is a good camera tho. Not really in the same price bracket tho.

Don't worry m8. Not having a go. I agree about the lens thing tho. I've got a couple of lenses. Spent a small fortune really. Don't skimp on lenses and u'll get some great pics. Sold a few of mine.

FZ20 does ok video too. Was looking at Daves bracket headrest mount earlier on another thread. I thought about it but it might encourage me to drive even faster! What camera/s have you got at the mo B Peaches?

I'm on my bro's pc at the mo, so unfortunately not. PM me and I may be able to send you a link. Haven't got any shots of the 182, because I had the 350D before the car. Got some landscapes tho to give you some idea of quality.

www.dpreview.com is a great place to look Sam but not sure you'll find much to match the S7000 in your price range fella. I had to spend s**t loads on the 350D to take the next step and only if you're serious about cameras and have large amounts of disposable income does it become easier!

S7000 is a good prosumer camera as well. Agree with the loads of expendeture thing tho. Take it from me, but I'm serious about photography. Also check out http://www.steves-digicams.com/ for reviews. It's a yank site but it's very concise.

The FZ30 might be worth a look, it superseded the fz20 and has just itself been replaced so there may be a few bargains about.

I've got my D50 back up to where I was (and beyond in some respects) with my FZ20, and I've only spent £500. Admittedly it's much harder work at the moment due to not having the aperture range or image stabilization, but the images are gradually going way beyond what I ever managed....

So I think a cheap SLR setup is do-able, but with what I've spent it would probably have been easier to stick with the FZ20 as I consistently got 80-90% of good shots with that, but I'm only getting maybe 50% good shots from the D50 at the moment.

I would say go for an FZ30 or 50 in your shoes personally, great cameras and they have many more features than the FZ20 (but more noise, sadly) which put them at borderline SLR levels of control.

As for the FZ7, I got one of these for a friend recently, great camera for what it is and for beginners more so, but if you are reasonably experienced a second hand F10/Z20/30 would be a better buy.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, Nikon are apparently close to announcing the D40 DSLR which if correct will be released fairly soon, essentially an entry level DSLR with the same sensor/processor as the D50 and a new 18-55mm kit lens for around £350.

Ive got a FZ30 an well pleased with it.
Thinl it was around £350, got a wide angle lens for it off e-bay for 70quid which is £145 in jessops and a UV filter. Got some mint pics with it.

picked myself up a f27... great spec on it.

got it for quite cheapish, 1gb card, wide lense, tele lense, bag, tripod and some other goodies
