Small connector on back of Headligths

Hello
So i had my front bumper off and the headlights out, and the small plug that goes into the back of the unit, has pretty much melted itself together . Is this connector just for the headlight adjustment?

I have cut it off for now and taped up the ends. Will try and get hold of another and fix it. Any idea what to check so it does not happen again? it did not pop any fuses, and still seemed to work lol
