Looking at building a small 4/5 page website but I’ve no idea where to start!

What sort of costs to design and build might I be facing?
Ongoing costs?

Help please!

"It depends"... 🤣

You are probably looking at 50-80 quid per year for a domain name and basic web hosting depending on who you go with and your domain name type.

As for the cost of building a site... is it a basic site with information only, or is it more complicated? Will a visitor need to interact with it beyond browsing and reading it? For example, will visitors need to register an account to use it? I'm assuming not...

You could go with a provider who has site building software/framework available such as Wix, whereby you could have a crack at putting a site together yourself. If you want something a little more bespoke, it could get expensive depending on needs. Do you need branding? Photos? Who is providing the textual content? Does it need to be responsive so that it works well on mobile phones and computers alike, and everything in between? I would think so... A bespoke site could be a couple hundred quid from a junior web developer, it could be thousands from an experienced developer, and the content needed will also affect costs.

Feel free to drop me a message if you want to bounce a few ideas around, or post up in here. 🙂

Primarily it’s going to be an online list of local driving instructors. Will need to have an application form on one page. Mobile friendly for sure as most people are using mobile devices now aren’t they?

We have a logo already, it doesn’t have to be flashy but needs to be edited frequently by myself or one of my committee members.

Our sister company does anything related to hosting

I can put you in touch with our sales guy who will know exactly what you want, and I'll push him into giving you a deal if you do end up taking out any hosting packages

Likewise, if there's any other members that need any VPS/bare metal/mail packages lemme know

I knew absolutely F all about website building. But I needed a website for a select few of my staff and customers to access.

I used Wix. It's pretty straight forward once you get used to it.

I need to sort a new one for us. One company 25 years experience were 5 grand. I need to make a plan as it's turning into a riot and although we don't need it for extra business etc I still hate that it's not up to my standards or the businesses.

£50-80 per year for domain and hosting?! Mines £20! Lol!

Tbf, web development is a dying trade now with all the click and drag wysiwyg builders, unless you want more in-depth things such as SQL databases and login systems. Saying that, AI will do that for you these days.

I guess it depends what you're after, or the client is after. I usually go with what the client wants. They are paying for it at the end of the day. 🤣 It is all a bit moot because AI does it all anyway. 👍

Have a gander at Squarespace, all in one domain and hosting and website, easy to create something simple with a few clicks and lots of pre built functions

Thanks all, have given me some ideas to discuss with my committee members and make a decision about how to proceed 😎

When i was helping my mate find a solution for his business website a few years ago, we got quotes from 4 or 5 local "web designer/social media support" businesses who seemed to be doing everyone's website locally, all 5 of them were building the website using online tools and were basically just clued up teenagers rather than qualified web designers which i found mental, as i remember 20 years ago a couple of mates used to do web design and coded it all from scratch!.

We eventually went with one of those and to be fair the finished product was really good and fit for purpose but i couldn't help feeling we paid a fair bit of money for the convenience of not having to do it ourselves when we probably could have!
