Looking at building a small 4/5 page website but I’ve no idea where to start!
What sort of costs to design and build might I be facing?
Ongoing costs?

My mate is an ex web dev/current web designer. He mentioned recently a ‘build it yourself’ type function that is amazing (in his opinion). I’ll ask him what it wasLooking at building a small 4/5 page website but I’ve no idea where to start!

£50-80 per year for domain and hosting?! Mines £20! Lol!"It depends"... 🤣
You are probably looking at 50-80 quid per year for a domain name and basic web hosting depending on who you go with and your domain name type.
As for the cost of building a site... is it a basic site with information only, or is it more complicated? Will a visitor need to interact with it beyond browsing and reading it? For example, will visitors need to register an account to use it? I'm assuming not...
You could go with a provider who has site building software/framework available such as Wix, whereby you could have a crack at putting a site together yourself. If you want something a little more bespoke, it could get expensive depending on needs. Do you need branding? Photos? Who is providing the textual content? Does it need to be responsive so that it works well on mobile phones and computers alike, and everything in between? I would think so... A bespoke site could be a couple hundred quid from a junior web developer, it could be thousands from an experienced developer, and the content needed will also affect costs.
Feel free to drop me a message if you want to bounce a few ideas around, or post up in here. 🙂

Tbf, web development is a dying trade now with all the click and drag wysiwyg builders, unless you want more in-depth things such as SQL databases and login systems. Saying that, AI will do that for you these days.
Isn't that the same with everything? When i was helping my mate find a solution for his business website a few years ago, we got quotes from 4 or 5 local "web designer/social media support" businesses who seemed to be doing everyone's website locally, all 5 of them were building the website using online tools and were basically just clued up teenagers rather than qualified web designers which i found mental, as i remember 20 years ago a couple of mates used to do web design and coded it all from scratch!.
We eventually went with one of those and to be fair the finished product was really good and fit for purpose but i couldn't help feeling we paid a fair bit of money for the convenience of not having to do it ourselves when we probably could have!
I think in days gone by you paid a web designer to build a website as it wasn't something you could easily do yourself without learning to write the code etc, but in the example above we were paying someone to use the tools designed to make it easy for the end user to actually build it themselves.Isn't that the same with everything?
