smelly smelly!

  Porsche Boxster

ive already searched for posts about smelly a/c, but not sure if it is related. most ppl complain that the a/c smells...... mine doesnt, but it really smells weird as soon as i turn it off and the fan is still on. i can normally fix this by wacking the heating right up for a few minutes and then turning the temp down again and all is fine. it doesnt smell at all if i dont turn on the a/c.......will one of those anti bacterial sprays sort it out? or is it something else?

cheers

Mike

It is bacteria that is growing on the evaporator..

Yes the spray will help for a while..

But the key to limiting the growth is to run the A/C ALL the time.. Winter and Summer..

Not only to reduce the smell, but it prolongs the life of all the A/C components.. Why, because the Compressor and the neoprean seals at all the joints need to be lubricated with the Oil that is in the system..

If you dont then the seals will eventually dry up and leak more than the do anyway, and at worst case the compressor Seizes up, voila a £1000 bill to replace it..

I would recommend that you Keep it on all the time.. Especially as you have "Climate" control.. and not just plain old Air Conditioning..

That means even when it is cold outside and you have the heater on the system is still circulating Oil and reducing the bacteria growth..

You know the busiest and most profitable time of year for A/C companies is March/April, ie when we have the first warm day of Spring.. Why? because a lot of peeps leave their Aircon/Climate control off during the winter. Then leads to dried out seals and the loss of refrigerant, therefore no cool air when they turn it on for the 1st time in 5 months..

But yes 30 mins every day is better than nothing.. ;)

doesnt that use a lot motre fuel thou? i used to turn my a/c on in my focus for about 30 mines every 2/3 weeks (both winter and summer!)or so and i never had any funny smells in the 2 years i had it. also i know on my focus that the a/c doesnt actually come on below a certain temp. not sure if that is the same with clios?

do you have to have it on minimum temp when you run it in winter?

i had my focus with ac for nearly 3 years and only used in on warm in the winter to keep the window from misting up and never had any probs
