Smoke coming out exhaust

  Clio 197
My dci has been smoking alot recently, mainly when putting foot down ALOT of smoke would come out. And sometimes just driving along normally a load of smoke would come out.

But yesterday whilst driving along at 35mph in 4th without putting foot down LOADS of smoke starting coming out, and I had to pull over. Revved it whilst stopped and no smoke came out. Then continued home and it was fine the rest of the way.

I recently put some Wynns diesel smoke treatment in with a tank of fuel that has nearly been used now.

Any ideas what could be causing the smoking? Sometimes it feels laggy at accelerating also.

Black: overfuelling; blue: burning oil; white: coolant (shot HG) or water in the exhaust (nothing to worry about).

It's a diesel, diesels smoke. I'm going to hazzard a guess at it being black smoke you had?

has it had a service recently? does it get used around town only or does it get a good run every now and again?

Do the DCI's use any sort of partical filter system?

Could be the ERG valve sticking/blocked. Our Micra has a DCI 80 engine which started smoking loads under acceleration. The acceleration was also really sluggish. Took the valve off and gave it a clean and, apart form an initial cloud of soot clearing, its been fine since.

Thanks for the comments.

Its not steam, it does let out steam as well when its cold especially in the mornings. But this is definitely smoke. Grey smoke.

Probably needs a service.

Had the EGR valve cleaned about 6 months back (maybe its clogged again?)

I used to do around 200miles a week mainly on the motorway so it got a good run. But now I only do 4-5 mile trips to work etc (not on motorway).

If it's grey/dark smoke and you particular notice it when you put your toe down, I'd be very inclined to say EGR valve. Should be a relatively easy job to do yourself, if it's accessible.

EGR failure is mostly, black smoke, with loads of carbon deposits with it, out the exhaust, & loss of boost from the turbo, also engine will develop a diesel knock, where the cylinders are being choked with carbon, & lack of air.

I had a laguna 1.9 DCi in last week, with grey, bluey smoke pouring out the back, diagnosed it straight away with turbo failure, anyway new turbo, & a flushing of intercooler & hoses, & all is well, but.. im not saying your has this..... but have you experienced any loss of oil? or at worst has your car tended to rev up on its own??

No, haven't had any loss of oil or self revving.

cheers

Clean the EGR valve and drive it like its stolen (sorted mine out a treat), If that don't sort it start looking more into it..
