Smoother revving?

A year and bit in and I've pretty much got my 182 exactly where I want it to be. One thing remains though which may not be so easy to sort. Above 5k rpms the engine note is really quite rough and doesn't encourage you to rev higher, which of course defeats the point in this car. The revs come easily enough but the engine, which is unobtrusive at low revs turns into a right old nail.

I've not driven another 1x2 so don't have a basis for comparison, but I have tried two different exhausts on this one. And my Megane which uses the F4RT is much much smoother at revs albeit it does have a fancy titanium exhaust.

I have 438 Catcams and all of the carpets and soundproofing removed which is no doubt exacerbating the issue.

Do they all that do that sir? Anything I can do to mitigate? I'm not expecting VTEC levels of creaminess, just to take away some of the harsh boominess and make redlining a more pleasurable experience.

Worth checking the exhaust manifold is not coming into contact with the arb
Thanks - the car has been given a clean bill of health by AW Motorworks and seems to be in fine fettle. I know I'm asking a lot of an old Renault to have a charismatic engine note on top of its superb chassis.

The noise my engine made with 438s was epic.

Until the map was found to be “lacking” somewhat and basically nailed my engine to the point it drank oil. It was then discovered about 4 other car’s that had the same cam and map package developed engine problems.

So, what does that tell you? One, it shouldn’t sound like a nail at high revs. Two, who mapped the 438’s?

Who mapped yours?!?

It was a very, very long time ago (like back in 2012 🤣) so I don’t think it’s fair to cast aspersions now, but it was K-tec.

Andy still works there though iirc? 🙃 however they are by far the longest serving specialist so obviously doing something right.

Interesting - thank you.

No idea who did the work as it was two owners ago in 2018. I have the receipt for the cams but not the mapping. It's definitely been mapped though, uses no oil and as mentioned AW have given it a clean bill of health. Alex says the engine note is not unusual. I just need to drive another one for comparison really.
