** So my clutch has just "gone" - UPDATE 3 - Burning Smell? **

Rob

As far as I was aware, the clutch is something that slowly wear's away... Buy today I went to get in my car, (which has been amazing lately) and it judders heavily as I pull away.

I didn't think much of it, but then it does it the next time I go to pull away, and then it turns out it does it when shifting down a gear too...

Now, this afternoon, the car was utterly fine, and it's done nothing but sit outside since it wasSt driven and fine.

I've taken it to a local specialist, hoping they'd say something like driveshaft or engine mount, but nope, he's fairly sure it's clutch. Says something could be warped (why it's gone so sudden)

So, in summary:

Can give it a hell of a lot of abuse when in gear, totally fine
Shifting up a gear, totally fine
Shifting down a gear - rumble/judder
Trying to pull away in first - judder

Wtf has caused this and could it be anything else?

Re: So my clutch has just "gone" - HELP

It's not just the friction plates that wear and slip. Something on the pressure plate side of things will be goosed.

It's 95% clutch though. Bad times. :dapprove:

Is it noisy with the clutch disengaged?

Frikken amazing link, thank. you!!!

Need the help of someone in the know now, my clutch cable felt "notchy" on the drive home tonight, i.e when the car wasn't moving and I was just in neutral, the clutch pedal was going down in stages.

Clutch 100% dead or possibly something wrong with my cable?!?

Re: ** So my clutch has just "gone" - HELP **

If you're having a new clutch you'd be silly not to have a new cable fitted at the same time... they're only £18 +VAT from Renault so not the end of the world. Get the crank shaft oil seal inspected/replaced also.

30mph, stick it in 5th (I think 5th anyway maybe 4th) and floor it, see if it tw*ts it up the revs with no increase in speed

If your clutch was 100% dead then surely you would have no drive at all

Thanks, but that wasn't my question...

Is it possible the cable is knackard and not the clutch??

It's not slipping mate, it's just juddering in first/on shift down.

£750? i would half that

I've just seen those new Rentech prices, they're pretty good, but I've also just seen a guide and am now tempted to give it a go myself with a friend.

Doubtful - If there was a cable problem it would be apparent with the pedal "feel" and "Position" at rest. Have you noticed the car losing oil?

Re: ** So my clutch has just "gone" - HELP **

No oil loss no nothing.

The car is 100% great bar this issue, it's been so good lately it's even surprised me.

The ONLY issues with the car:

Pulling away in first - juddering (this is lessened if pulling away faster (so must be clutch judder??))
Downshifting - a rumble/judder as the clutch reaches biting point
Cable feels "notchy" like it moves in stages and not smoothly.

I know all of these point to clutch, but I guess I'm trying to avoid the obvious.

It's been far too long for you to even pipe up in here Ginge... let alone on your birthday!

I just want it sorted as I am really in love with the stupid little thing at the minute.. I don't really fancy a drive to Portsmouth, but it may well be the only option...

I heard Failsport rates are quite reasonable...
New Clutch Invoice from mike:

5 x Salt & Vinegar Crisps
1 x Crate of fosters
Tree Fiddy

Rob - for what Mike is charging to do it i'd take it there tbh. Unless you have access to a ramp I would not attempt either.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
Not good man.
The last thing you want to do is sell it after that nice little dash upgrade ;)

Definitely sounds like something fubar'ed with the clutch unfortunately.

Rentech prices seem very reasonable! Tempted to get mine done for that..

Poor Clio :dapprove:

sounds like something broken rather than just normal wear. It happens, unfortunately. That rentech clutch price is fantastic, I'd take him up on that TBH. Feel free to still stop by saturday for an opinion if you're local

Yeah, I am massively tempted by the Rentech price, I'm not too scared of giving it a go myself... But for £375 I'm not sure if it's worth it...

I don't have ramps, but I've got a friend who was a mechanic for a couple of years who's willing to help for a couple of days and I'm quite keen to have a go now days.

Luke, I was thinking of asking mike for the failsport price, I will do tomorrow infact.

Cheers for offer Danny, I may stil stop by.

I can't decide if you're talking about failsport mike in that last sentence or rentech... Lol!

£375 for a clutch change at Rentech?!

That stupidly cheap?!?!!

Does that include parts?!

Rob ive been having the same issue with juddering from pull away and gear down, put a powerflex dogbone on because i wanted too not because i thought that was the problem and it has seemed to fix the juddering.

But bang same symptoms as you mate, judders less on fast pull away and judders from first and downgearing....

Rob, I am 99% sure the JMS boys are not far off that price as well (And will be a bit nearer you?)

I've already got a powerflex mate, so can't be that I don't think, however I'll get under the car later and check it out (if it stops raining).

That was my thoughts too, going to give them a ring today and ask about what clutch it is, I'll supply a valeo one if needed.

Only fit a valeo clutch don't be tempted to cheap out, been there done it and regretted it in the past. £375 is a stonking price tbh just depends how much your time is worth, they're not difficult to change on stands. Most awkward part is getting the box back on but its theres 2 of you you should manage.

Cheers for the advice, I'd heard enough clutch horror stories to know that I needed a Valeo unit and I won't be skimping. (I always get OEM or OEM+ parts for the car tbh).

It does sound/look do-able, and TBH my time is worth nothing to me, work would let me have a day off to do it if I asked, no issues, and I'd bung my mate £100 to say thanks, so I am very tempted.

I'd take it to Rentech Rob. He changed my clutch in Jan :)

If he wasn't so far away I'd be there this morning!

Rob, I am 99% sure the JMS boys are not far off that price as well (And will be a bit nearer you?)

I'll give JMS a call today and see what they say. Cheers.

+1 - Totally agree on both points here. Only fit the Valeo kit (LUK are alright but i've had a couple of faulty ones in the past so avoid them now to save doing the job twice) and the RenTec price of £375 fully supplied and fitted is for nothing... I've seen a couple of RenTec cars to and Mikes work is on the money so there will be no missing bolts or loose items flapping about afterwards. I'd personally add a new clutch cable to the parts list to.

If you're doing it on your driveway kiss goodbye to a weekend as you're gonna be either dropping the sub-frame or be pulling the complete lump.

Cable, clutch kit, check.

Cheers chaps. I think I'm going for it next saturday.

A certain member has offered a hand and has experience, I can't thank him enough.

I'd pencil in 2 days tbh if you've never done it before. Or a long day should see it through.

Get the car as high as you can on the stands the higher it is the less you'll struggle getting the box out, take it you're going the subframe off out the bottom route?

Also don't forget some new box oil you'll loose it when you pull the passenger shaft so don't forget to drain it first. I've been using the motyl stuff recently after castrol epx was discontinued and rate it very highly.

Cheers for advice, I've changed the box oil myself before, so I'll be draining that first, no worries. Thanks for the recommendation for a replacement though, saves me asking the question in a day or two :)

The member who's helping me has done more than one of these before so knows what he's doing. He'll be helping out and guiding me through it.

Out the bottom route it is indeed.

Cheers mate, it's all a learning curve eh?

I was properly happy with the car too, f**king French thing!

Re: ** So my clutch has just "gone" - HELP **

Ok, so I'm driving back from somewhere today, and the clutch is really dying, the pedal is clicking at the top of its travel, and clicking and you're pressing it back down, then, all of a sudden, there's a noise and it's fixed. I mean totally fixed... The cable still feels a little ropey and not smooth but nothing major...

Could this be the self adjusting ratchet system for the clutch cable?

Could something have been caught on the cable?

I have no idea, please help...

I think I'm still going to replace it all next weekend...

Re: ** So my clutch has just "gone" - Updated, Help! **

LOL, you sounded in a proper panic on the phone.

I recon the cable is shafted and something wore through enough to make it operate fully, it'll probably fail entirely soon though

You need to speak to Jay/Burp.

I sold him my track car and that had EXACTLY the same fault with the clutch pedal.
