** Some advice needed on engine damage from matt, edde, fred etc.... :(**

  BMW 330d :)
Hey I was wondering if any of you guys in the know could help me....

My 172 cup is very sick at the moment, its been using about 3ltrs of oil in the last 2-3 weeks and i put it into the garage today....

I've been checking the oil regularly and it has consistantly been going down and i've noticed some oil pooling under the rocker cover at the top of the engine, but not enough to lose 3 ltrs!!

Now the guy in the garage today said that a compression test was done on the engine which showed that pistons one and three had very low compressions.... He seemed to think it might be the piston rings or head gasket away...

Its already had the head resealed by renault under warranty which obviously didnt cure the problem. The sump plug also fell out under warranty with the car running at 30mph but I switched the engine off before it emptied itself of oil.. (Mechanics "forgot" to do up sump plug at earlier service)

Now I just want to know....

a) What do you think could be damaged in the engine from the symptoms I've described??

b) The guy at the front desk said that the sump plug falling out would not cause this to happen to the engine now.... Surely BS!!!

c) What sort of case do you think I have for them paying for all the work to be done??

d) Should I get rid now???

P.S The car has done 42k miles....

Thanks in advance...

we've just stripped down and inspected an F4R 182 engine for a customer after his engine developed a knock

renault said it was due to him not checking the oil level, and hence the bottom end was knocking

after we'd inspected we found that to be utter rubbish!

the circlip on the end of the gudgeon pin had failed, worn a groove in the block, and the circlip bits had been sucked in through the strainer into the oil pump

gotta love renault "diagnostics"

if the sump plug fell out, that could quite easily of cuased damage, only take a second for damage to occur
