Something squeaking when clutch pressed in [video included]

As above, when the engine is running and has been for a short while, I come to a stop and push my clutch in and can hear a squeaking noise which sounds like it's coming from inside the engine bay on the driver's side. I've not had time to check exactly where it's coming from, but I can hear it from inside the car when waiting at lights etc.

At first I thought it might be my cat-manifold join that had somehow come loose, however it's all tight as it should be.

Any ideas? Only happens when the clutch is pressed in!

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Sounds like the clutch release bearing mines doing the same.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Mines doing same lubed cable worked for a bit but now thrust bearing doing it :/

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Am I alright to drive it in the mean time? It won't get worse or give me any problems will it?

Yes, drive it, if it is the release bearing, not the cable, yes it'll get worse. When it eventually fails, it'll feel like an earthquake as you attempt to pull away.

My ph1 died at 88k and I did the clutch kit (comes with release bearing).

If it's the release bearing, depress clutch and the noise should be constant for as long as you hold it down iirc.

Changing the clutch? Not cheap. Bit of a pig to do yourself too. The second most expensive job on the Clio really after the cambelt with dephaser etc.

Clutch kit itself is about 135 quid or so for a genuine valeo one *use nothing else!

Basically it's a clutch change. (If you're doing the bearing, then it's worth replacing the entire clutch too while you have everything apart.)

I think I said that somewhere? Or if I didn't, I meant to...

Yeah, you've have to be certifiable to not change the clutch whilst doing it.

Scrooge.

From a specialist, you're looking at ~£450.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

It will be the clutch diagram making the noise I bet, most of them do it. I recently fitted a clutch kit and 2k miles its creaking just as it was with the old diaphragm. If it only squeaks when engine is running it will be the release bearing.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

As rob said if its the release bearing the noise should be constant while engine running! If its diaphragm only as peddle getting pressed down

Found some lads near me who reckon they'll do a clutch on this for £299, they quite new to be honest, young guys etc. had two mates have an Aygo and KA done there, no probs, no damage to any parts that are visible ( like driveshafts and gaiters )

Lol. They'll do the first one for that price. ;)

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

I'll try and get a video! It's after the engine has been running a while, say I come to the lights and push the clutch in... it starts squeaking a bit. If I let the clutch out, it goes away.

Is it the bearing or the other thing?

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Sounds like the release bearing to me. Mine did it for about 20k before I changed. But I wouldn't advise leaving it that long. When I changed it it was properly fucked.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

 so because of this pesky bearing, I need an entire new clutch? I'm just trying to comprehend these thoughts.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

No but to get to the bearing you will have also got to the clutch, once there it's easy. Plus I imagine you can't buy a release bearing seperatly?

Yeah, you can.

Less than £20 from ECP.

Basically, to swap the release bearing you have to take the gearbox off. While that's off, you might as well swap the clutch for the extra £80 or so. It's no more labour usually. Unless it's been done in the last 60k, and then I'd inspect condition as they do last forever if looked after.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

I don't think it's ever been done tbh so it'd probably be advisable.

Have any of you ever heard of the clutch lightening kit thingy you can buy from Renault? My mate's ph1 had it fitted, it's basically some weights on the cable somewhere (you can tell I've no idea what I'm on about) and it makes the clutch pedal a lot lighter. It felt great on his ph1.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Yeah, that's just an updated clutch cable.

Not too tricky to change, especially when the box is out.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

No idea, I'd imagine £40-60?!

Adam's your man for that one,

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Alright thanks for the help Budgie :)

I'll try making a video of the noise and when it happens... unless everyone's 100% decided that it's the clutch release bearing. In which case I will shed a few tears.

Sounds like it's the clutch diaphragm. Does it only happen after you've been driving for a short while and the engine has warmed up?

Yep! I'll test it again later. I'm getting mixed answers here though :dapprove:

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

Aye I was planning a trip down to Fred sometime soon anyway. Just wanted to be sure of what needs doing exactly, there's already a load of 'little' jobs

I mean anyone mate, even a forum members that's handy with the spanners, should be able to tell you in about 3 minutes whether it's the release bearing or not.

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

So it's just me that has no idea what one is/does?

I'll do a video in a bit. Everyone's at work today!

Re: Something squeaking when clutch pressed in

If the clutch is quiet when you first get into the car on a morning and when you've driven say 15/20mins and it starts creaking it'll be the diaphragm.

My 182 has started doing it. If you get someone to press the clutch pedal for you with the bonnet open you'll hear the creak coming from within clutch.

I think that is the case. Is it anything to be worried about? Obviously I will double check when I can, but if it's just the diaphragm?

To be honest I'm not sure, I've been searching on the forum for a couple of weeks for an answer (or at least a cheap fix lol)
