I would say yes, lots of people will say stick to canon and nikon (fair comment)

However my actual experience with a sony a700, has shown me it is an excellent camera. If i was buying into a camera setup again it would be on my shortlist.

Certainly for an entry level dslr i would seriously think about it.

Built in IS works very well.

I wouldnt buy anything other than Nikon/Canon.

6MP on a DSLR isnt the same as 6MP on a normal camera.

6MP on a D40 is high enough quality to print on a big 4' square canvas.

I'd hate to deal with Sony if anything broke. I'm sure its a capable camera but looked into the product support for someone on here and it was not existent.

that would more depend on the retailer, assuming it needed a repair it would be much the same as canon, just let out the work to 'recognised centres' much like canon?

Also depends who you know, happen to know the sony uk DSLR product developer , glad to say i havent needed him yet.
