Sony VAIO shuts down after 5 mins

Hi,

I have a sony VAIO and it has started shutting down completly if you take the power lead out for more than 5 minutes. It doesnt go into hibernate.

Is this the battery in need of replacement?

Should i just get a new one?

So it works 100% fine on mains? How old is it? Sounds like a battery issue yes, if it under warrenty contact Sony I guess, if not get hunting on ebay for a cheap replacement.
