SORN - anyone help please?!?

  Cooper S JCW
I'm looking at buying a 182. It's tax ran out at the end of November and it is being stored offroad. The present owner now has a new car and is no longer insured on the 182.

What do I do about test drive, retaxing, driving it home if I buy it?

I haven't got a clue how this system works - can anyone give me help quick please???? :S

Has the seller declared it off raod with a SORN declaration, if so then you need to take the form to the post office with your docs and tax it.
Obviously this may be difficult if yer waitin for your insurance papers to arrive, unless you know someone who has a traders policy and is willing to tax it for you.

This website answers most of the questions for you. I've had to drive card in the past with no tax cause i've had to wait for docs, but thats a risk you take, I guess the same applys with the test drive, its a difficult predicement, if you buy it then you can insure it there and then, and drive home

bit of a bugger this one ,, i would have kept the car insured till i sold it ,,,, if it gets pinched or anything then your covered imo......... test drive wise im not sure ,if ya dont live far from where the car is then its the risk ya take if ya drive it home etc mate , go to the dvla site as other peeps have suggested above if ya unsure or you can always ring them ??

iirc you can only drive a car if the owner is insured on it ......(even if it says on your insurance, that you can drive another car with owners permition )
if he isnt then you wont be !

Some companies do 1 day insurance dont they? If its only cheap you might as well get it... better to be safe then sorry!

Yes he has declared it SORN. I would have to take out a new insurance policy on it anyway so 1 day insurance isn't really a problem. I'm going to speak to the dvla tomorrow about the tax issue.

Thanks for your help guys and girls!
