Sorting the handling

as some of you might know i got a set of turinis for my car and had them on for a week before i took them off because i hated the handling (plus had 2 illegal tyres on them!)

the problem i had with the handling was the wheels were pulling the car a bit on bumps and in bends and i lost all confidence in the car, it lost its go-kart feeling!!

now i miss the looks the car had with the turinis so im getting 2 new tyres for them but the handling needs sorted! now im told it wont be the tracking as it was checked just 2 or 3 weeks before i got the turinis (it had standard 15s on it at the time) but could it possibly need checked again? (the car feels ok under braking if that helps)

i was told i just need the suspension geometry set up but what exactly needs done and any places about central scotland that do it? what about a front strut brace? was told by a guy who had a corsa gsi who went from 15s to 16s that this helped him (but obviously the clios a totaly different chassis)

also remember that the turinis have a much wider track if that helps, could that be the problem (See the pics below to see what i mean!)

cheers for any help

look how far the 15s sit in the arches at the rear!

Yeah just sounds like a bit of tramlining, hold the wheel a bit tighter you girl! lol ;)

Mine was similar going from 175 tyres to 215's. Soon get used to it, don't notice it any more, and it will improve the handling, mine did. Did comewith good tyres though (eagle f1) Get throwing it into some roundabouts and corners and you'll realise you can take them even faster than before. It may be worth getting your tracking checked though aswel.

i'll probably get the tracking checked again its just not as fun to drive with the 16s as it is with the 15s.

with the 15s i can fly into roundabouts and have the tyres squeeling like fuk! but never had the 16s sqeeling as i never trusted the car fast, suppose ill get used to it :(

If the offset, ET, on the Turinis is less than on the original wheels, (and I suspect it will be less, if as you say they make the track wider) it will have the effect of changing the steeering geometry. We used to have a deal on Fondmetal wheels and on some cars they destroyed the handling - we eventually found that this was the reason - sometimes we could machine 5mm off the back face of the wheel hub and this could just make the difference.

If your using wheels of a RS model then surley as the track is wider on these cars, the offset isnt going to work with your model. I would guess you would need spacers to push them out further into the arches and slightly longer bolts to match.

Speak to a professional, and be careful in the mean time mate.

Suspension geaometery is what they will adjust when they do the tracking.
I'm not sure who's been servicing your car but with the milage if it hasn't had the suspenion and bushes changed this will make for a badly (possibly damgerous) handling car.
You need to check the bottom ball joint sht top mounts the ARB and its bushes also the suspension arms for wear.

its on apex springs and dampers, bushes look fine but getting polly ones for it at the end of the month.

on a lighter note ive put the 16s back on with the 2 new tyres at the front and 2 old ones at the back (oposite from what it was before) and its handling fine for some reason? infact even better than it did on 15s? possibly because im more experianced since last time i had the 16s on too?
