Soundbar setup - ready to smash it

  Inferno 182 CUP
I know sounders are poverty etc but I'm leaving my AVR and separates behind in my old house (sold them for a tidy profit) and getting myself a simplistic soundbar and tv. I say getting i got them today.

An LG LED TV & an LG Soundbar.

Now I'm ready to smash them up.

Cannot for love nor money set it up correctly.

The soundbar has HDMI IN & OUT. So Ive connected the TV HDMI ACR input to the Soundbar IN. I then connected my Xbox One to the Soundbar OUT. This is what the instructions show. The xbox would only show up once. If the input was changed to bluetooth and then back again it would not display unless i unpugged xbox and out it back in.

So i then plugged xbox directly into TV so TV has Soundbar on HDMI and Xbox on HDMI 2. Great. All works fine as it should. Xbox turns on as does TV & Soundbar and i have sound.

Now if i change the soundbar to bluetooth or other input the TVs sound reverts back to its own sound and that plays in the background over my sounder. If i then change the sounder input back to HDMI1 (xbox) I have to go into the TVs settings and change TV output to soundbar?!

ARGHHH help?!

Does your sound bar not use optical cables?
My xbox hdmi goes into the tv, but it's optical out goes into the sound bar. That way I don't have to turn on the sound bar if I don't want to as it still plays the sound on the tv.

Yeah if i use optical but i want the TV sound to never ever work .. i want every bit of audio through sound bar and if sound bar is off i want the tv to be silent. Using HDMi also means i can use CEC and the Tv turning on or off means the soundbar does the same

So all your external devices plug into the TV and then you just have optical out to the soundbar?

If it's the same as my sound bar the ARC from the TV connects to the HDMI out on the sound bar. I don't use the HDMI in on the sound bar at all, but if I wanted an audio only link to it that's how I'd do it according to the manual. It seems arse-about-face to me, but it does work.

Think I've got a solution albeit a shitty one.

Ive connected the Soundbar to the TV with Optical so the only connection on the Soundbar is now that.

Ive connected all my devices to the TV with HDMI. The soundbar is now permanently set to optical and the TV seems to remember this setting just fine without much issue, I've turned it off and on multiple times and it didn't forget that the soundbar was the primary source.

If i change the soundbars input to bluetooth or similar the main TV volume now mutes (yay!) so i can play music without a tv in the background!

My TVs remote is also controlling the soundbar volume, the only thing it won't do is turn the soundbar off everytime the TV goes off, but i have set the soundbar display to off so thats fine, you wouldn't know it was on now anyway.

Everyone wins (kinda!) Thanks for your help

And this morning the Xbox does not control the soundbar volume?!? Neither does the TiVo remote, yet the main LG TV remote does?! Ffs.
