Sounds like a tractor part 2

Hi, the horrible tractor sound that my 172 makes now and again has been diagnosed. Apparently it is the hydraulic tappets clattering away. I have been told that they will need replacing even though most of the time they work fine. Has anyone else experienced this on such a low milage car (20k) ???

cheers batty

I had this problem. Turned out one of the tappets had seized and buggered the cams. Renault put a whole new cylinder head on which was good as I got my cam belt and aux belt does as well which needed doing anyway. They payed for the majority of it as well. Which was good as the price they quoted was over £2000 for the lot. I payed £300 towards it in the end

mine also still runs on the stuff Reno uses, Elf semi synthetic but very expensive stuff. Nothing wrong with semisynth....

Funny you should say that because initially I thought it could be a spark plug problem because it sounds like a diesel. Thing is this problem comes and goes but Ill check them ta.

One careful owner?

mmmm not really i think. I do warm up quite a bit but i thrash it every time i drive it.

Only when my girl is with me i can't drive fast.

I am going to put some Motul in it next time round though...

i had the same problem 1 day after i bought a 172! Took it back to the stealers, and they replaced hydraulic tappets and followers on the front cam, problem still occured. Needless to say after 4 weeks they hadnt fixed it so i got myself a refund and bought myself another 172 which works properly!

Heard on the grapevine though that this is due to oil pressure, my "tractored" at idle (800rpm) but once over 1200rpm it'd be quiet again. Whilst the garage was working on mine, with the new tappets in, they couldnt get them to close, proving not enough oil/pressure was being provided by the pump.

as above really, try some oil flush, and also with your next lot of oil put some hydraulic lifter treatment in, Wynns make some
