Spark Plug Thrads

  172 CUP
Just had a spark plug blow out today. Has stripped 3/4 of the thread by the looks of it. Have managed to get another plug in and tight but whats the chances of it staying there?

If it does come out again, what is the best option for repair?

Get it helicoiled, its happened to a few people before. I wouldn't try running it on a small ammount of thread myself. Head will have to come off to be done I think.

It's the second time it's happened to me. First time was done under warranty when car was only a year and a half old. Not sure if its the same plug or not though.

How much work is it to take the head off if need be?

I'm sure I remember some mechanic friends of mine telling me they could do it without removing the head.

They put a load of grease in the hole so the metal shavings got caught by that and then fished it out afterwards. Not sure how "good" a way it is to do it like that.

People have told me it can be done without removing the head using the method as above and using a very tight little sucker to remove all the swarf

Ben_p's 172 did this a while ago i think, it chewed a plug up.

He got it helicoiled and replaced the leads/plugs etc.

The car's still going strong with another member now.
