Speed Sensor

Guys, I've got a ph1 172 and the speedo has died completely after months of intermittent readings. Can anyone tell me where the speed sensor is so I can have a look at the connection?

depends on the ph quick its either abs sensor or gearbox speed sensor. If your car used the ABS sensor for speed then it will be the near side sensor thats needs changin if its the gearbox sender then you will need the gearbox sensor its at the top of the gear box as illustrated. the gearbox sensor is £30 and the ABS sensor is £150 and is a tw^t to change

The phase 1's all use the gearbox speedo sensor. Some early phase 2's use the sensor in the gearbox but later ones (Cuped excepted) use the ABS system.
All 182's use the ABS sensors.

hi i got same problem my speedo not working and i got non consistant revs.. my uch is clicking every few seconds like a rely is trying to kick in.. service light is on abs light is on em light is on..
its a clio 1.4 16 vavle 51 plate. i called renault they sware blinde i got a sensor on the gear box.. been out side looking all day today and no sensor..
i looked everywhere..

i am now asuming its the wheel hub abs sensor.. please can someone help.. i cant afford expensive garages.. if i change the near side abs sensor will this cure the fault.. oh i put it on a hand help copmputer and it gave me error speed sensor faulty..

please help

i am in harlow in essex but i am skint.. i lost my job so i got no option but to try and fix it myself.. nice cars but when they go wrong they are a major head ache

would the UCH click if the abs abs/speed sensor is gone..??

on the UCH is has ABS writen on it. im guessing that if i change the ABS/speed sensor on the near side hub it will 1. make the abs light go out the stop light and serve light go out and the speedo will work.. but will it cure the strange clicking from under the dash on the UCH? I had the UCH box open it has a curciut board inside not alot to it at all. its got 5 black relays solderd to the board. i can feel one or 2 of them clicking. i wonder if i solder replacent relyson the board if it will fix it. i am very good at soldering. does anyone have any idea???

thanks for your help fred@btm wouuld you say i need a new uch? ispoke toa guy today in nottingham he claims to be able to insert my code off the faulty uch to a second hand one for £80 can this be done oris his talking rubbish?

i think i have sovled the problem i am going to share it here as if anyone gets this fault i hope it will help them in the uch box there is a curcuit board. on the board there is 5 relays.. they are soldered.. each rely is responsible for certain fuctions i.e the NEC EP2-B3G1ST relay is responsible for the wipers windows roof central locking. i am not sure yet about the others.. i need to locate the abs relay on there. you can buy the relays cheap on the internet just google the part number the numbers are written on the relays.. the clicking sound is a dead relay on my board.. prob the abs onebecause its faulty i am getting the abs light on my dash also prob responsible for the stop and service light. the engine maan light can be erase cheaply using a hand held tool about £20 from ebay.
the seepdo not working may have something to do with the faulty relay or it could be sensor on the whhel hub i ordered one just in case.. oh be warned you wont get them sensors out in one peice you have to smash them off and dig them out with a screw driver and hammer.. nightmare but you will get there in the end.

renault wanted £200+vat for a new uch and £66+ vat to program.. just goes to show how much they rip people off.. the relay cost around £5

well if anyone wants to add to this it be nice to chat.

this might seem like a sily question but does anyone no where the fush is for the interior light on the clio 1.4 16 v dya as i looked in the pasanger side dash area where all the fuses ar and there isnt one forthe interior light my raido light and boot ligh also not working they all connected to this fuse but i dont know where it is. in manal i got with car is says its in the passanger side dash but its not anyone no?

I've got a problem relating to the Speed Sensor. I got diagnostics done and it reported Speed Sensor faulty too. And I have no gearbox sensor so assume it's defo the wheel one.

1. Is it defo nearside wheel sensor?

2. Will this cure my rev counter, temp gauge, driver auto up and down electric window and rear heated window dying? lol weird problems lol

The UCH has nothing to do with the vehicles Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). It is, in the case of the X65, merely a combined switching and control unit for the vehicles body functions and the primary gateway for all CAN signals.

The ABS, as far as braking is concerned at least, is monitored and controlled by a specific ECU on the ABS pump (located in the engine bay). If this is reporting a wheels speed sensor fault then you most likely have an issue with a wheel sensor, reluctor ring or a signal incohereance (due to a wiring fault between the sensor and ABS ECU).

It is possible to reconfigure a UCH, I can do it myself but you need some specific equipment (not CLIP) to do it and i don't offer it as a service because cracking 2nd hand UCH's is a warranty minefield.

I've seen speed sensor fault come up several times on cars with no gearbox sensor fitted. sometimes there's even the plug on the loom there but no hole in the gearbox. When this has happened there's been no symptoms, just a code. I believe it's Renault using up old looms and ECUs, basically just lazy from the factory. Wouldn't worry unless there's an actual problem that effects driving

Dan, that's a very good point to.

In that case, I'd confirm the VIN numbers match the technology as the UCH no doubt needs reconfiguring and the ABS software needs updating. This is another reason why I hate swapping looms and UCH/ECM/Key fobs between phases as it can catch you out.

I'm currently running a poorly mapped Sirus34 from a Phase 1B on my RS2'd Phase 2 and you wouldn't believe how many stupid issues I have (no cruise firmware, constant door open warning light, etc)... Can't wait to get it mapped on the 14th.

Had to restore Phils (P17TOO) ecu firmware after it had the wrong version put on for a pops and bangs map. Lost all cruise function etc

I have same problem my speedo doesn't work at all rev counter is very delayed responding to the throttle or even drops to 0 and temp gauge fluctuates between mid and 0. The car is a 1.2 16v 2002 with abs and for the love of money I can't see no sensor on the gearbox or diff

hi clio owners. i want to kow more about speed fault in odometer.. so my dad have megane scenic 2002. no speed sensor ir gearbox. in one diagnostic say whats in pc he coud see speed normaly .. all abs sensors work fine, no abs light in cluster...

so how and from there this signal goes to instrument cluster? read some forums- it maby from abs ecu, so someone else say what some white multiplug near battery has corrosion, if some pins connect together, then speed come up...

maby someone have expirence in this
