Speeding up Vista...

  Megane DCi 147bhp/350nwm
any little tips and tricks to speeding up vista?

obviously without making hardware changes.

i knew loads of tweaks for xp to make it runner better but don't want to risk same tricks on vista!!

run services.msc

read the descriptions for each thing and you notice you dont need half of them.

Right click on the ones you dont need, properties(or advanced, i cant remember) then select disable.

I'm not great with these things, but a simple option is to get a 2gb USB stick and use it as system memory..

No offence, but if your OS is running too slow for your liking then you either need to change your OS or upgrade your machine.

Tweaking settings will provide such minimal results that you probably won't even notice a difference.

My comp runs Vista fine, just annoys me having 30~ processes running that are doing things that i dont need doing.

When i tried vista i think i got rid of over 30 services.

I didn't really notice any speed increase, although my comp spec will run vista twice over without probs, but i just didnt see the need in runnin stuff that didnt need running. Saw a slight difference on startup though :)

I have to give vista some slack here.. some of the linux distro's can be speeded up massivly with a little tweaking.. I personally like to re-compile the kernel removing everything from it that I dont need.. (on top of the obvious things like stopping services that arent required).

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard lol.

Why? Its a feature of Vista... put the stick in and it asks if you want to use it as storage or system/ram whatever you want to call it..

You can get 2gb sticks for £10 these days.. cheap and easy.

Just seems a very odd concept, that and the fact that moving large amounts of data over a USB bus will result in increase CPU usage. That and the fact that I don't think a USB stick is able to provide the data throughput of say additiona RAM sticks.

I was gonna install OSX86 yesterday... but i dont know anythin about it so didnt... any good?

cant play games on i can you?
