Are there any good programs to speed up xp, by removing un needed background processes and programs?

I will be doing a clean install of windows when I finish uni, but just dont have the time to do that at the moment.

Get a program called 'Advanced Startup Manager'. With this you are able to find out all the programs being loaded on startup and disable them from loading.
I did this on my pc and it freed up a lot of memory and gave me a faster boot time. Little things like Itunes and Ipod programs can slow it (I had them on mine and don't even have an Ipod)!

anyone know how to find out if service Pack 2 is installed? I tried to download it off the microsoft site but couldnt find any confirmation that SP2 had been installed

Click on My Computer, a panel on the left should say View system information.

Will say Service Pack 2 if you have it.

  cock mobile.
Start - Run - msconfig

You can disable lots services, startup apps etc here. But you'll need to know what you're doing.

m8 msconfig is probably the best prog to use, its lists all the programs that startup, if you dont know what a certain file is search for it on here http://www.processlibrary.com/ it will tell ya whether its important or not.

Just click start - run - type 'msconfig' - click last tab called startup and have a look at what is starting up. I have only avg and ctfmon running.

You can also look at the srevices tab, click hide all microsoft services and it will show some that maybe you dont want running like norton, ipod, office software etc.

if you mess up you can always use system restore to go back a few days.
