Speedo broken...

  Cupra
2001 172 PhII

I have used the search and have seen that this is a common problem but there aren't really any concrete answers in the threads.

After driving a few miles the speedo drops to zero.... sometimes it pops back up after a few more miles but othertimes it will stay put for the remainder of the journey.

I have taken the wheel off, removed the lead on the gearbox, cleaned the connectors (see attachment) and sprayed a liberal amount of WD40 on it but it still carries on misbehaving.

I am having the car valued today as I am hopefully part-exing it but if they see the speedo is buggered I dont think I will get such a good result.

Questions:

1) Is it also necessary to remove the orange bit from the gearbox and do something to that or do I have to order a replacement from Renault?

2) How easy is it to replace yourself?

3) Any other ideas on how to fix it?

I had this problem on my ph1 172, dont know if its the same but if you take off the plastic guard from the bottom of the engine and feel around under the gearbox where it joins the engine there should be a wire and connector in a really hard to reach place. This is what was causing my speedo problems. Exactly the same as yours but not sure its in the same place on a ph2.
You can also pop the dials out and check the two plugs haven't come loose but I doubt it would be that.

If you have a phase 2 mk2 then its unlikly you have that gearbox speedo sensor there are some early car swith it but very rare.

Most likly its a connector on your dashboard thats a problem as the phase 2 (99.99%) use the speedo sensor from the ABS loom and since you don't have ABS issues its most likly from the ABS system to the dash the connectors behind the dash arn't wonderful so that might be the issue.
