SPL in a Clio..

Has anyone here got their car measured for SPL? If so, what numbers are yous hitting and what frequency is it at and what subwoofer/amp combo are yous using?

Ive got two Digital Designs 9512e in a ported box and a US Amps 2000X and Im only hitting 145 dBs on the TermLab meter (151 dB on AudioControl meter). I thought it would be more.

The highest recorded here in Australia in the CAAdB Stock A class (1 Amp, 1 Battery, 2 10s or 2 12s or 1 15) is 147 dB which is in a sedan (Nissan Pintara) with 2 Kicker S12L7 and a modded Earthquake D2. I wanna beat that record and just need some advice and ideas on what numbers people are getting with their set up.

When i had a go at SPL in my clio, i was using one rockford 12" getting 900 rms, in a massive ported box and only got 135dB! i was shocked, but i think my battery power was letting me down. given up on SPL now, SQ is my game

i reguarly hit 140 off one 12 inch cerwin vega (the one with red rim) powered by a genisi 5 channel amp!

I cant remember if i mentioned the system to you before but im hoping for over 147db...well see.

As far as SPL goes. It works the same in all cases that the key to a good score is in the box design. Its harder to get right if you are using ported boxes but when you do...youll know about it because your db reading will go up a fair bit.

Keep playing with the box design.

I know someone who used to get 148dB with Lanzar stuff. An Opti 500.2 amp driving a pair of 12" Opti-drive 1234D DVC carbon fibre subs in a custom made band-pass enclosure. Not sure what the configuration was in terms of channels/coils and what Ohms version the subs were though.

u might wanna check the figures there mate! 148dB is an awful lot just for one amp and 2x12" subs! esp as lanzar gear aint known for its SPL, or its SQ for that matter!

Ah, but this is Opti series stuff. The great undiscovered secret of the ICE world! The amp is 3600W RMS at 1Ohm (900W RMS at 4Ohms, 12V), and costs £695, which for Lanzar, is a lot of money! The subs are 2200W RMS@ 2 Ohms. All of which together, in a very special enclosure, means big figures on the SPL. Admittedly Ive not seen the SPL meter to verify the figures myself, and I was surprised to hear such a thing, but looking into it carefully, those kinda figures from that system arent outwith the realms of possibility.

That Lanzar setup doesnt actually seem to be getting particularly high figures. If that is the specs on the equipment then really it should be hitting a bit more than that in the right SPL enclosure.

I got mine recorded by meastreet last year running a pioneer 6300 with standard tweets, infinity reference in the front, standard rears, and pioneer 300w 6x9s on the parcel shelf all running of the HU then i had a 12" pioneer tsw304c sub running of a 500w legacy amp and i got an SPL of 132.6. <--- i thought that was quite good considering most of it was running off the hu.

you obviously dont understand how SPL works, its got nothing to do with any freqs above about 70hz, which rules out anything run by your head unit, the dBs come from your sub.

Was the sub in a sealed box? cos if it was, im sure that there is no way that you would get 132.6, im sorry. your legacy amp will be 500 watts max, not rms.

at mean street, i got measured 135dB using a rockford fosgate 12 in a hue box, with 900 watts RMS up its ar.se,

im still not convinced that lanzar gear would get anywhere near 148bdb!

Firestarter, the current UK champion in SPL, is about to start a new challange to get over 150db with 2x12" subs, and be the first one in the country to do it, and for that he is going to have to use some extreme gear, such as DD or CV Strokers! so there is no way that lanzar gear could get near it. sorry.

This is my humble opinion of course.

adam forgive me for being so thick!!! I was merely explaining the set up.. for ure info it wasnt in a sealed box as you so cleverly pointed out it was in a ported box and i was aware that the 500w was not rms as the f**k1ng thing only cos 80 quid k

the way you say "i thought that was quite good considering most of it was running off the hu" gives me the impression that you think that these things run off you head unit contributed to your SPL score.

I hate it when people say that get high scores like that when its obvious by their set-up that they didnt, it makes people, like myself and many others, who get properly metered scores look poor, even tho we put a lot of time and effort into the set-ups. but im sorry blackclio16v, im sure your pioneer subs, 6 by 9s and legacy amp are perfectly set up to give you massive spl and total sq.

oh and we have a cincquento doing 147.7 with two 15 slapped in a standard box in the back, and this car actually took 2nd place at Donny over the audiobahn demo car?

Some of our customers will be competing this year...all of them will be in the SPL classes rather than SQ which is unfortunate as I want to get stuck into a full on SQ setup this summer.

Well be getting my car metered soon which is loud but not really built for SPL due to having sealed boxes. If it gets a good score in its first test then I might compete with it for the rest of the year before our new 28000watt RE equipped estate goes onto the scene.

I thought personally that Audiobahn demo Golf was built mainly for midrange rather than out and out SPL...Im not suprised it didnt get a particularly high score on the meter. I dont think it knew what it was built for. I was impressed with it until I sat in it...the subs were definately struggling.

not that difficult actually but why can you not just say its a clio 1.4 or summat like everyone else or do you have to test your prowess with that to as well as your bountiful knowledge of ice

Ive got 2x kicker solobaric 15l7s in mine with 2x phoneix gold tantrum 1200s.

1 on each and there rated at 1450wrms into 4 ohms

measured at 157db at sound and styles more to come when the subs are run in.

ive been in some mental cars in my time, a 106 with an 18" Cerwin Vega stroker thats done about 155db at MSC, an escort that has 4x12" DD subs and 2 viper 2500s thats was the first person to hit 150db in street 3-4 class in the uk, a corsa that has 3x RE X.X.X 15s in running from god knows how many crystal amps, a rover 800 with 6x15" directed subs, a nova with 6/8 (cant remember) RE subs, and a few more!

Black Clio, im actually embarressed to say that i drive a 1.2 Clio Bebop, so thats why i say entry model, i cant wait to get rid of it, and get my 16v, and yes, i do think that i actually quite knowledgable about ICE, ive had enough of it in the 2 years that i have been into it, from the crap that i bought first, magnat amp, pro-plus sub, to the great equipment i have now!
