Sports Cat

  BMW M3
I am thinking about getting a Janspeed backbox for my 182, but am contemplating getting a janspeed sports cat as well.

Just wondering if they are really that different to the std cats as i thought renault improved them on the 182, and whether it is worth spending all that extra money. Would i see any gains at all from just a back box and std cat, whether it be bhp or just drivability.

Def dont want de-cat.

Thanks

I would be interested to hear people's opinions on this also.

I'm booked in for ProSpeed on monday and am not sure between cat/back (sounds cheap), sports cat (IS expensive) or de-cat (11 months to it's first MOT, but what are the costs with refitting cats).

i had a sports cat fitted to my car at the same time as my prospeed.

it is a 100 cell cat and it flies through mot's no probs.

whether i got any gains is debatable but the oem exhaust was about 1 1/2 in dia. now it's 2 1/4 so could be from that

the only down side is they are just as loud as a decat imho

The person I spoke to recommended a 200cpsi cat, and said that the 100s are only different for 300+hp applications. Said it has 70% air flow, now obviously a decat doesn't restrict air flow. But they're very illegal, and come MOT time, I don't want to have to shell out money to have it taken off and refitted (before and after). Say I have the car 2 years. That's 4 times it has to be seen for my CAT to be placed and removed.

Already have a Janspeed cat back system and was thinking along the lines of their sports cat too. But is it really worth the money?

Fred, what de cat 182 options do you offer?

yeah but f**k it:clown:

the 200 isn't as free flowing as the 100(f**k all really) but the 200 will stop the emissions light from coming on if both lambda sensors are left in which is definatly a good thing

i got a sports cat from k-tec.

as above its a lot bigger pipe than the standard sizes cat and they say you get small gains from it which in theory - as its more free flowing compared to standard, makes sense.

however also as above it is definatley a lot louder.

Hmmm, then what's the problem with the emmisions light if you know why it's on and it doesn't fail MOTs ?

Why on earth spend £250 on a sports cat when a decat is £80?? 15 minute job to swap the cat over and MOT is generally at least 1 yr away.
Wouldn't dream of it myself and i have decat, lol. Light still hasn't come on either.

Why on earth pay 50pence for a king size twix when you can steal one ???

Staying on the right side of the law my friend.

Think i might just stay with my std cat, if it doesnt provide significant gains and is louder.

themanwho: Just wondering what you think of the janspeed with std cat. How it sounds etc... Do you have any sound clips?

There is little or no difference to the sound when fitting a Janspeed sports cat with the std box, although I can confirm my car does pull and rev harder with it fitted.

A few weeks later I had the Janspeed rear box fitted, and found little or no performance increase over std rear box and sports cat but she does sound nicer.

The sound keeps developing and sounding deeper with the miles. :D

All in all then guys, is the sports cat worth the £270 for the few horse power ? Does it increase throttle response at all ?

Or would it be more sensible to look for power in other areas, such as induction kit and a modified manifold ?

I fitted a sports cat at xmas and found it to give some nice gains.

The car already had a custom cat back system, PiperX panel with uprated feeds, sealed silicone elbow and a remap. The cat just seemed to bring everything together nicely with a nicer exhaust note.

Mine was only £53 notes as well ;) . Magic

Personally, I reckon it sounds pretty good. Bit beefier than std. and a bit "more like it should", and I agree that it dooes seem to get better with age. It seems well made and I really like the tailpipes with the logos on. Not sure if there's a power increase to be honest - only a rr would tell for sure - I think someone worked out that it's actually about 1 mm less diameter than the optimum for a 182, and I think Fred would agree that it's not the perfect design, but hey ho. And it is 8kg lighter....

Someone had a couple of vids on here a while back.

@ Stoddie. Oops, I meant the 182 one http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1265
