Spraying newbie seeks advice .....

Ive got some alloys i wanna spray up but to be honest havent got a clue where to start!

Whats the best procedure for spraying alloys, sand them down? prima? They are going from silver to white. I don't need the best job done so wont need them professionally sprayed.

Been doing mine all weekend was all going good till forgot to sand down! and went a bit grainy... smoothed down today and going to start it all again should take a few days but will be worth it.

Did mine, wipe over with damp cloth, sprayed with balck hammerite, 2 cans sorted!!

if you want a really nice finish, lots of layers, lots of sanding (more hard wearing that way also) get some really fine sandpaper to smooth the wheels off after the final coat before laquering to get rid of orange peel, and then use tonnes of laquer.

FPMSL - laqure to get rid of orange peel.

If you are sparying and getting orange peal then you are moving the can too quickley and holding it too far away.

Ypou only need to laqure over metallic paint, you don't laqure over normal paint.

If you get orange peel you must rub it down with wet 2000 grit wet and dry to get a perfect finish before laquring, then rub that down with 2000 grit paper again to get a perfect finish before polishing with sometyhing like G3 cutting compound, and then polishing.

Don't give out wrong advice

one more question, how long have I got too leave it in before primer coats b4 I can wet sand it? also is it same time between silver coats?

generally speaking bodyshops dont like doing wheels as its fiddly and time consuming. professional powdercoating usually costs circa 180 for 4 15'' wheels which will give a harder wearing finish too

generally speaking (i find) it best to leave primer overnight before wet sanding it. you can wet sand silver paint as soon as its hardened, but probably safest option is to leave it overnight also. shouldnt really need much of a sand if its sprayed evenly. altho im sure i give out wrong advice

Does that mean that mean that say im doing 4 layers of primer I can only do one a day? :O

if your putting 4 layers of primer, then you can do all 4 layers in one day, but will then need to leave it for a period to cure before you sand it. you have to use your judgement really on how long. On wheels i would take the time to let it dry properly, although not strictly necessary on things like interior bits. Maybe just sand a corner first and see if its sanding nicely and not "clogging" up the paper. If it is leave it a bit longer.

dont count how many layers your gonna do, just spray however many you need to cover it until your happy. primer will be ready to flat in hour with a hot air gun on it unless its 2pac then leave it overnight
