Steering is creaking?

  clio 182
Hi all. I have the 182 sport on an 04 plate and lately I've noticed the steering is creaking quite bad. I've jacked it up but with no weight on the wheels you can't hear nothing? It's not always their but by the en of every journey it is. Has anyone else had this problem or any ideas what this could be??!

This is very noticeable. Top Mounts as in suspension? Im not the most knowledgeable when it comes to cars

Just checked the top mounts and noticed the top mounts are actually moving when the steering wheel is turned is this usual?

Yes if they didn't there would be an problem, the top mount consists of a rubber mount and ball roller bearing which rotates when the steering is operated.

part of the wish bone. They can be changed on there own. No need for new wish bone.

will cost you about £13 for the part from a motor factors, just make sure you get the 12mm one, i asked for that one and they still gave me a 10mm, i only noticed when the car was in bits on the drive, ended up drilling the holes bigger and re-using the bolts so not the end of the world.

dont have to be, but if they havent been changed why not do them both.

the safest way to do it, i believe, is to remove the suspension strut i didnt and it was a nightmare to do, i am sure someone will tell you how to do it properly

Remove 16mm bolt from hub, will need persuading with a punch.

Remove the two 18mm bolts retaining the ball joint to the wish bone, this will then cause the hub to float around abit and the lower arm will spring up against the hub. Then you need to use a hammer to persuade the ball joint out of the hub. You may need to use a punch and enlargen the lower part of the hub where the ball joint sleeve is visible in order to remove it completely from the hub.

Be carefull on re-assembly mate that you dont catch the driveshaft gaitor because it is slight fiddly. I normally put the new ball joint into the hub first and then alighn the two 18mm bolts with the holes on the lower arm.

this will be a great help thanks. My friend just told me when removing the ball joints I will have to cut the old ones out, is this right?

Loosen the bolt on top of it and smack the old ball joint out with a hammer and chisel, that's how I did it
