Steering Rack Boot Inner Diameter

  2003 Clio 172 Cup
Just purchased a steering rack boot from GSF with the larger end having an inner diameter of 40mm. However, when it came to fitting, it doesn't appear to be quite large enough to slip over.

The original boot inner diameter is 44mm, so have I been sold the wrong one or is there a knack to fitting it in such a restricted area?

Thanks :)

If you get a genuine Renault boot it will probably be the same as the old one, I bought some from Euro car parts, quoted as 39mm I think. They are a tight fit ( which isnt a bad thing ), but obviously being rubber they will stretch. Just get a thin screwdriver under the lip and get whatever bit you can on first then prise the rest on , it was a bit of a bugger , turning the steering wheel left or right ( depending which side you're doing ) can ease access a little. Patience and perceverance are the key.

For anyone that may need this in the future, the 40mm diameter boot from GSF (part number 430RE0640) did fit perfectly in the end. However, it required a great amount of perseverance to fit as it is a rather snug fit (which is a good thing).

The method involving a flat screwdriver that Flobalob mentions above is exactly the process I used to get it to fit over the lip, although it does take patience as it’s quite fiddly in such a restriced area. The only thing I would add is that it helped to fit the boot by gaining access from directly under the car with the plastic under tray cover removed as opposed to attempting it solely from the arch area with the wheel removed.
