Steering U,J

Finally sorted my steering problem, Its the U,J on the column thats gone, Been quoted by a garage (not renault) a brand new one 2 days waiting £216 fitted, And for a recond one about £150 fitted get the car bk tmoz.

Are these ok prices? Anyone else had theirs done?? Cheers.

whats a UJ? can you remind me what kind of steering problems you were having as im starting to get a loose feel from the wheel too.

A UJ is a Universal Joint - A double-pivoted connection for transmitting power from a driving to a driven shaft through an angle. So the Haynes manual says

The symptoms i was getting were - alot of play when driving,Wandering & hard to keep in a straight line, And when stationary i could turn the steering wheel about an inch left and right without the front wheels moving.

Yes mate i have exactly the same problem, wear on the joint above the rack on the column, my local garage is ordering one in for £140 + vat, and recon 2 hours of work at £70 +vat to fit it. but that is a williams one, if the price is much different i dont know.

Its getting fitted on friday, so hopefully should be the end of the car wondering. I found it really noticable under quick accelleration.

Garage phoned to say after further examination the actual steering column is shagged!! Right near the bottom as it goes onto the rack i think, Bloke at the garage sed it was well dangerous and its a miracle when i turned i didnt carry straight on!! ooooooooops

Hoorraaay got the car back just now New steerinhg column and a full service, f**king ace!! Feels alot better, more responsive in the steering, and all in all alot better to drive and better pick up!!

Just thought id share that with you all as im well chuffed its finally sorted!

sorry to disapoint you they take around 30 minutes to get off and a quick clamp in the vice and a blast with the mig and its like new,all you have gotta check is it measures the correct lenght and bobs your uncle

Yeah they tried that!! It didnt work at all, the column was well shagged i seen it!

Somebody had tried welding mine when the garage looked at it, apparently this should never be done?? The UJ had gone on mine but I had to have the whole column replaced as its single unit now....typical Renault....more cash for them.

same prob ive got 143 + from renault,plus labour. recon bout 110.also my lower ball joints were shagged!!done them
