Stiff Steering

Anybody out there know why my 172 cups' steering has tightened up? If I turn the steering wheel it is very reluctant to center again. The steering boss I have just fitted does catch very slightly on the plastic around the steering column, but it was doing it before I changed the wheel. Could it be the track rod ends or maybe the steering rack????

power steering would be my first call...

when the car is stationary, can you hear the pump whining when you turn the wheel lock to lock?

The pump doesn't whine at all, but I have noticed a bit of a clunk when locking the steering over!

I'd bet the belt has gone slack it needs retensioning a new belt migh as well be fitted £12 for the belt and then about half andhour to fit and tension th system.
