Stone chip repair

Decided to have a go myself before getting a quote from Chipsaway... so i started today.

Im using this guide HERE.

i will be finished tomorrow, so you can see how it turned out. Today ive basically cleaned, and wet sanded the area with a sanding pencil. Then i applied a few coats of paint to the chips to fill it in.

Here is what the b*****d looked like before i started:

as you can see its quite deep (they're on my aluminium bonnet)

Expect to see the finished pics tomorrow after ive flattened the paint, and polished it all up again to remove the marks from the sanding.

if its s**t, i havent lost anything cos it cant look worse than that ^ :)

update pics tomorrow!

Me too - hope you get it sorted!

I've got the b*****d of all stone chips on my bonnet. Even my dad spotted it from about 20ft away and he's oblivious to stuff like that!

Brave man Dan, I've not tried that since my first car and I made a right mess of it. lol

Keep us posted, you could make a few quid on the side if you do a good job.

Good luck.

right then... just been out and wet sanded some more to flatten the repair. The pic below is taken just after i had wet sanded so it hasnt been compounded to remove the scratches from the sanding.

The reason i dont have a finished picture is because im still not happy with the results, so more paint has been applied and will be finished tomorrow :)

anyway, here is the most up to date picture for comparison:

How it looks now (you can see the dulling caused by the wet sanding, will be finished tomorrow :))

its a lot better, but im a perfectionist so will do more tomorrow. :)

Good work, so far Dan. I have a couple on mine :(

Where did you buy the kit from?

i didnt really buy the kit...

the sanding pencils i made myself. I used some car shampoo mixed with water for the wet sanding, along with some 1500 grit wet n dry.

Touch up pen i got from Renault for about £7 odd.

then im using some Megs Scratch X to remove the effects of the sanding afterwards. I'll top it all off with some AG Super Resin and AG Ultra Gloss.

expect to see final results tomorow :D

I cant wait.....Can you write us up another guide as well, with material prices. Will definitely be having a go on my bonnet and alloys before FCS.:D

Its looking much better already.

heh, ok... i'll write a guide for my website when im finished.

Does it show that im bored, off work for 2 weeks! Heh.

1500?? eek! i'd be inclined to go 2000 to 3000 personally.

i thought that... but the 1500 works very well. you just have to make sure you keep the surface well lubricated :)

The ScratchX soon makes the paint look like new again afterwards.

heh, right only another 8 or so on the bonnet to do... and then the whole front bumper.

i think i'll go and get a quote for a full bumper respray. This was a good learning experience, but i wouldnt do it again lol

you was very brave and turned out brill... i take it that it wasnt easy hence you wouldnt do it again?

nope, not very easy.

the thing i did wrong to start with was not flattening the edges of the chips... i left them jagged, so they were still visible after the repair.

Then i put too much paint on in 1 go... the sanding/buffing part was quite easy though, i'll feel confident doing that part again :)

well very glad you posted this as we can all learn from it although i dont think i am brave enough to give it a go so i take my hat off to you fUbAr for doing it..

picked up a couple of stone chips and have a scratch on the bonnet too most pple cant say "oh you cant see it" but i know its there.. have a friend who works in a body shop who said he would sort the scratch out for me just got to pay him a visit..
