stop & battery light on dash

was out in the car last night and the STOP & BATTERY light lit up, any ideas what could cause this?

Could be the alternator isnt charging? Did it stay lit up, or did it go out?

Either your battery/ alternator, or both needs replacing.

sash- it has stayed lit up, it come on last night but started no prob this morning for work.
