Stop light comes on when handbrake applied

I went out with my sister in her clio for the first time in ages today, and noticed that the stop light comes on when the handbrake is applied (obviously also stays on when u start the engine with handbrake on). Is this normal? it doesn't come on at all while driving (hard accleleration and braking). The handbrake does need adjusting, as it comes up most of the way before it starts working, but i wouldn't have thought this was bad enought to warrant the "STOP" light (and it comes on as soon as you pull the lever anyway, no matter how high up it is).

What model clio, age..

Id check the brake fluid first off...prob down close to lower level.

If it is, maybe close down to lower limit on pads or disks.

It could be something as simple as a wiring mistake? (ie, "stop" instead of "(!)").

well I;ve checked the level and its in the middle. but it doesnt come on while driving with the fluid sloshing about, it just comes on when the handbrake is applied. (with the handbrake light too)
