Straight or bent?

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Apologies for thread title, couldn't resist!!!;)

Basically am looking for either a 172 Cup or a FF. Wondering what peoples opinions are on buying a Cat-d motor?

Have been looking around and there's a fair few, am going to view a Cup tomorrow. If buying one on register would be mega fussy,
ie: would only buy one that was D, not C.
would buy one damaged, so I would have work done [not stuck with
someones elses idea of a 'mint' car
would only get a car with rear damage
would have a thorough inspection done of vehicle
would pay bloke from bodyshop I know and trust 100% to view damage

Resale isn't an issue as I'll deffo be keeping car for a minimum of 4 years, as the amount of money I've lost on cars in last four years:(

So would you guys and gals?
Any tales of experiences appreciated......;)

I dont think there are any issues with it at all. Of course, there are some rotten eggs out there that undermine the excellent work that others do to repair cars, but as long as you know what your buying I'm sure you'll be fine.

I think mine was a Cat-D, but I had 2 mechanics with me when I went to see it, and they said it was fine, and repaired so well that you couldnt tell there was ever a rear shunt.

alot of straight cars have had shunts, but a lot of bent cars are put together w**k,ive done a few and allways take pics of repairs so i can prove they have been done proper, and them VIC checks are shite that they have, alot of people at work do there own repairs and i wouldnt even trust the car and they pass.

I'm in the same boat as you, have repaired numerous cars, My pug was a cat C, the vic check is only an identity check not a check of the repair.

and it says on the certificate ''not proof of identity''what the fook, there was a loop hole that in lincoln you could register a cat b on the road

vic checks are not there to check the repairs

yes I would have have purchased write off's. My mrs clio that I repaired was a cat c.

You won't have to have it vic checked with a cat d mate so don't get confused. Just an MOT/Tax to go back on the road.

my saxo vtr turned out be a cat-d my own fault with buying without a car check..live and learn!
i have looked at my share of repairable motors and there are quite alot of CAT-Cs about that looked like they should be a car-d with labour costs etc now adays alot of insurers come out check car and write it off.
some one bumped into my ex's car ,they cut right in front of us, front end smashed, engine and suspension etc still intact they wrote it off as a cat C

i also looked at a 172 cat C ,only damage was o/s front wing, suspension leg and driveshaft..would hardly write that off
