Strange handling @ speed

  Clio 182
Ive recently bought a 182, at speed im talking over 100mph it seems quite twitchy almost like its lurching and is actually quite scary.

I'm not sure if its just they way it is as ive been used to heavier cars (530d & TT 225)

Its almost like that sensation you have just before you loose control

It doesnt pull to either side, steering wheel is dead straight, all tyres are newish and have even tread

Any ideas?

There are a few posts about m8 that are similar to this but I'm not sure if there was a definitive answer. Nic's 182 is like this....pulls you all over the road when on cam in 2nd gear and although it still grips well enough it feels very 'loose'. Think driveshafts have been mentioned as well as track rod ends and a few others

Unless it something silly like unweighted whees or wrong camber then who knows, take it into somewhere that has a hunter allignment machine and ask them to see what your camber is. A setup is usually around 80 quid for camber.

Could be a number of things:
  • Alignment
  • Condition of suspension components
  • Wheel weighting
  • Brakes binding
  • Condition of drivetrain components
etc...

Have you recently changed front or rear tyres? What tyre pressures are you running?

Thanks for the response, I guess it needs to be looked at by someone with specialist tracking equipment

Not recently only bought the car recently, they are all about 6+mm

Dont drive over 100 mph? ;)

Make sure whell weights are intact
or stiffen front end e.g trackrod ends, ball joints maybe some stiffer arb bushes
i gotta admit though mine doesnt feel exactly safe at them sort of speeds
so i dont tend to venture to far into them lol

Get your wheel alignment, wheel balancing, linkage, steering rack ends... all checked out mate.

there will probably be some play in something

  Clio 182
Ok will do, I was unsure if it was just me at first, but this confirms it in my mind

However,do they tend to feel secure at speed? or do they bob about/squirm a bit anyway

  Clio RS 182
small light cars generally will, plus the fact the clio isn't exactly aerodynamic is it. at 120 mine felt fairly secure tbh!

Over 120 mine feels like that too, it can be anything i.e a slight bit of incorrect camber and at them speeds it gets multiplied into a larger issue.

Ah. I was going on the basis that the Cup is THE quickest car around corners ever (actual fact, apparently).

id check the rear shocks as this can cause the bobbing squirming you talk about

2 bolts take one off and check for resistance in the shock

if there isnt any then there goosed

  Megane RS 250
Mine is a bit the same, I'm going to fit new bushes all around, balljoints (it creaks when turing the wheel), eibach springs and serviced and customized dampers. I hope to finally have precise steering feel, no bobbing in the fast corner and a much more safe handling.

  Clio 182
It strange though, as i believe the shocks were changed for cup ones, also the tyre pressure is ok.

I have no wheel wobble is it runs completely straight, its only at high speed if feels odd

IIRC cup shocks are same as standard.i wouldnt try guessing, just take one off
it is a piece of piss an takes 2 mins an you dont need a jack or anything

  Clio 182
Update on this, at MOT time a shock was leaking, So I changed it - this solved the problem and transformed the cars feel
