strange noise from under the bonnet

  RB 182 Cup
I had the cup full serviced and cambelt change on wednesday. started it up for work on thursday morning and noticed a 'screeching' noise (coming from the cambelt i think). so, i took it back to the garage yesterday morning and they said its normal for that sound to happen when timing belt and cambelt have been changed. they need to 'settle in'. also i was told my power steering might not be great for a few weeks due to the change.
can anyone shed any light on this please?

Sounds like the aux belt is slipping which is weird seeing as its an auto-tensioner. But theres no "bedding in" to be done and they are chatting shite. Something isn't right.

so obviously my best bet would be to go back this week and tell them the noise hasnt gone? i dont want them to fob me off with the same response though.

Well go back and say ive had advice from several people who know the in's and out's of this car and they say there should be no noises like this after the job, Please rectify it or ill go elsewhere and you can pay for the cost.

Fred, i spoke to you a few weeks ago enquiring about servicing. you said i would need the cambelt changing due to the age. i also mentioned id be coming over for a yozza system from you. i did plan coming to you for the service, but trusty words of my dad said go to where he gets all the work on his car done at this local garage to me. i used woodyard. i can pop over this week sometime as i dont work too far from where youre based, i believe.

oh dear, you may regret listening to your dad i'm sorry to say!

did they have the renault tools? how much did they charge you?

i can state there should be NO noises

  RB 182 Cup
im unsure if they had renault tools to work on the car.
they charged 680, which included full service, cambelt and tensioner, aux belt and front crank oil seal.

Not up 2 scratch on these cars yet, but sounds like a load of rubbish their are speaking. prob that they aint tensioned the belt tidy! which aint good if thts the prob.

  RB 182 Cup
when i took it back to them yesterday they said the belt will tension itself over the next few weeks, so the noises im hearing are normal.

the front crank oil seal - when replacing the cambelt they noticed that had split, so replaced it.

Im concerned if what they've done is going to cause any damage. fred, any chance i can pop by this week for you to have a look please?

This has just happened to me. I took it back and they told me they had put the "steering pump pulley" on the wrong way round, so they turned it around and the noise stopped!

  CLIO 182
Total rubbish that is,they dont tighten themselves atall. i wouldent really say that the timing belt is slack... coz it would usually slip off the wheels completely. could something mayb b rubbing inside the timing casing?

handy little update...

i was talking to a customer of mine at work today, got on the subject of cars, and it turned out he was a test engineer and mechanic on citreon cars for years and said he'd take a look at my car... bonus!

on inspection, he said straight away my newly fitted cambelt is too tight... great!

thats obviously why ive never heard that noise before!

so, job tomorrow is to phone the garage and get them to adjust the cambelt, but while they're at it, they can replace the belt and new bearings that they've more than likely messed up after telling me to 'drive some miles on the car at the weekend' to cure the noise.

very p***ed off comes to mind.

I was going to. It was listening to the 'wise words' of my dad that made me go there, as he get all his work done at this local garage. They obviously dont have the proper tools for the job. Im a little lost now on how to forward them the bill for someone putting it right when they are claiming theirs nothing wrong.

  Black Gold Trophy
what sort of noise was it? when do you hear it?
I've never heard of anything like this apart from a slipping fan belt! It's quite possible they re-used the original fan belt when they took it off to do the timing belt

if they fucked it up through not knowing anything about the engine in the first place, they're not going to be able to fix it. The price you've paid is also nearly 3 times the cost of the job from a specialist.

You can't just adjust the tension on these belts either, the tension effects the timing

I know this is an old thread but I've just had the cambelt kit, dephaser pulley and aux belt kit & tensioners done at Four Ashes Renault. After getting it back there is a constant high pitch squeak on tick over and it gets faster when I blip the throttle so I assume it's belt related. It never did this before, the last change was done by BTM and there was no squeak.

I took it back and they said it was normal for this to happen, although it doesn't sit right with me. I had the rear discs and pads done and today the near side inner pad fell out!
