Strange sound in first gear

  ?
Whenever i put the car into first gear at about 10-20mph, with the clutch still down, it makes a funny noise. As i brake to slow the car down the noise changes, the pitch seems to change when the cars speed changes.

This happens when the clutch is down, so its not even in gear! and this only happens in first gear, what could be the problem? The car makes no such noise when it actually is in first gear with clutch engaged, and drives absolutely fine with no other noises.

I only noticed it recently, and its not a loud noise by any means, but once you notice it its really annoying!

Any ideas what it is? please help.. its got me worried the gearbox/clutch could be on its way out!

Stationary or creeping, you can tell the box doesn't like being put into first whilst your rolling. Especially at 20mph.

just sounds like the syncro trying to spin up for you putting it in 1st. at 15-20mph you shouldnt need to select 1st.
