Strange start

Only had my car a week and yesterday, when I went to start it, nothing happened. Phoned the previous owner and asked if he knew what the problem might be and he said that it had happened a couple of times to him. He said that if i turned the key all the way and held it there for about 10 - 12 seconds it would magically fire up . Went and tried it and it worked!!!!

Does anyone know why this happens from time to time and what can be done about it?

sounds like the starter playing up. Hitting it will probably give you the same result. Only ever happened once to mine.

put in in first gear (turned off) handbrake off and try to push the car...it will just rock but do it hard a few times then try and start it....same with hitting it....if it starts straight away then yup its your starter motor
