Stud Conversion

Thinking of going for a stud conversion on my Clio cup, I've spoken to JamesT87 on here about them who says just locktite them in which seems like a decent enough idea.

Only thing is I like to drive it quickly on B roads and plan on driving it on track this year so want to know how safe it will be and are there any better ways of securing them other than locktite?

locktite is only to stop them unwinding when you remove a wheel. Torque the nuts right and they wont come loose, studs are stronger than bolts

Once the wheelnuts are done up the studs are held in by the massive pressure exerted on them by the tension created when the nuts are torqued up.

dont buy the cheap rubbish like the rally designs ones that dont locate properly though, get harry hockley ones or the pure motorsport ones.

OK Cheers chip, so when you torque the wheels up i.e on the nuts, does that help the stud itself torque into the hub itself?

I'm not 100% clue'd up so I may sound a bit stupid lol

Its not that it torques it into the hub, its that because the nut is pulling like hell on the stud, this in turn pulls the stud in he hub, and its this tension that stops them from undoing.

I always use stud lock as well though, just to make sure you dont wind them out when gunning wheels on and off.

Yeah thats the kit I was on about, thanks for the link, its much cheaper than the hockley version that I use too, really good value I reckon.

Key features are the lead before the thread to allow the nut to go on straight, you can be an animal and use a gun if you want TBH (although im sure the official line is that you shouldnt!) and that the shank is thicker where it passes through the wheel, this is great as it helps really well locate the wheel even if its loose on the main spigot, and it also means that when you install them you can do them up fairly tight as it will butt up against the flange.

Looks to be spot on thanks again gray and chip.

One last question, I'm potentially going to be running between 15mm>20mm spacers, will i need to get longer studs for these, as I know with some spacers you need longer wheel bolts.

75mm length allows for most spacer thicknesses (up to +12mm) to be used without changing studs

Not sure if you will be ok on 15mm or not based on that webpage, ive not tried so cant comment.

Personally for 20mm+ I would want bolt on spacers anyway then you just put the studs into the spacer, in fact thats exactly what my mrs had on her old mk1 clio to use vauxhall wheels.

Yes no problems at all.

Just avoid any that user longer wheel bolts as what happens then is that you end up with a deep section of exposed thread between the point it touches the nut and the point it touches the hub, this then means it can stretch more when loaded which makes it more likely the wheel nuts will work loose.

On the cheap rally designs ones on my corsa they used to come loose a lot, the hockley ones though (similar to the pure motorsport but more expensive) have been fine.

That meant to say 'safe' btw lol.

I will go for the pure kit then, sounds like they're tough enough and up to the job, will report back with my findings when I get them
