Sub Woofers, Passive & Active?

Right, I was looking at sub woofers for my car and I have now been totally confused by someone who was talking about active sub woofers not needing amplifiers with certain head units or something.

So what way round does this go? Do I need an amp? Do I need a passive or active sub?

The head unit I have is the Pioneer DEH-4000UB, which has a sub woofer output if it makes any difference.

passive means you have to purchase an amp on top
either will work with your headunit
