Subframe removal before Gbox??

  ClioSport 172 Cup
Haven`t found a great deal of information on this. Does the entire engine sub-frame have to be dropped on the 172 Cup to remove the transmission? Or can it be done without?

You have a couple of options. I prefer to fully remove the subframe when there's a ramp available just because you have such a lot more access. Some drop the subframe a long way down on 1 side, never tried that one myself. Pulling the engine out the top with the box still attached is another route, questionable merit unless there's several other difficult access jobs to do.

I drop the subby everytime. Like danny says, you get alot more access and it will slide straight out when dropped down abit.

I tend to unblot the rack from the subframe before removing though as so not to drain the PAS fluid.

Thank you guys. I`m tempted to do this job myself as renault quote £858 at renault in burton!!..problem is i don`t have access to a proper 4 post lift, just axle stands. I have done a clutch before, just didn`t have to drop the sub frame to do it!

Just spoken to my mate who is an ex renault engineer and he says its an engine out job...he can do it for £350 for me all in. Does he literally mean engine out on a crane. lol

engine stays in normally, but you can do it by pulling the lot out (debatable which is quickest, its less hassle pulling the entire lot)

cup is easy, just disconnect the rack from the column, dangle the rack out the way and the box comes out through the passenger side wheel area

that's about what i charge to do a clutch on one, bearing in mind the clutch is over £100 on its own

I dropped the subframe right down on one side, and it was easy enough.

It would have been much easier had the subframe been totally dropped, but I didn't want to mess about with the steering rack..

id say it doesnt have to be changed at same time depends on how it fells when ur driving like to much slak in the cable a new one wouldnt do it any harm and it would be easier doing it whilst gearbox is out bit more room for you to route cabe around
