just get the chip fitted, plug it in and play, no dealer trip needed.

If its an ecu straight off another car i dont think it will work, i think they lock to the car so you will need to pay to get it unlocked

true, when you fit a re-flashed ECU you plug it in and leave it with the ignition on to let the imobiliser sync to the ECU and from then on it's locked to the car (assuming you're talking about a 172)
