Super Human Strength

Has anyone ever snapped one of these before?

Can Renault design something that doesn't break?

Yep. I also bent a wishbone trying to undo a hub nut.

I'm not strong, far from it, but I think it's more to do with the fact Renaults are weak.

Yes it happened to me while I was pulling not pushing as well, nearly knocked myself out!

Sheared a bolt head off one of the rear calipers once, then realised I'd been turning it the wrong way.

Who uses it anyway?
Me - until this evening.

I thought 'what the f**ks up with this nut' and then this just snapped clean off. I've done it before to a ratchet - snapped the little square connecting bit off but that was when I was using a piece of scaffolding pipe as a breaker bar and stood about 5ft away. There was some effort going into that!

Good effort!

I've done that before to a 3/8" to 1/2" adaptor thing.

Buy a cross type one, so much easier to use, and quicker as you can spin them.

I found one in the garage :D

But I need something I can carry around in case I get a flat tyre whilst out and about. There's nowhere to put it in the boot :dapprove:

I think these style are better than the standard Renault one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003D0O1C2/?tag=cliospnet01-21

I got one at Lidl a while back cheap.

Edit: They have a foldable one on offer atm - http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/SID-C.../our-offers-2491.htm?action=showDetail&id=929
Cheers Mike!

Do you carry a spare wheel then? ;)
No but I'd rather be able to lift it up to save damaging the rim or tyre if it's salvageable.

Incidentally the standard jack is also broken, as well as the bits on my sills where the broken bit it supposed to slot through.

Lol fair enough mate.

Standard jack is absolute shite I used one once and never again, thing fell off and put a nice dent on the underside of the skirt. I keep a saxo jack behind my seat but do need to get a wrench. I quite like the look of that lidl one linked above.

I'll definitely have a quick look for one of those next time I pass a Lidl. I want something small enough that I can strap in the boot ideally using the standard strap near the O/S tail light.

If you send / take that to renault they will replace it for free. They have to by law, as things sold in the UK are required to be 'fit for purpose'. A metal tool to lift the car would be expected to last the duration of the cars life, and so under law that brace is not fit for purpose. A breakage would also constitute a serious breach of health and safety and as such renault could be in trouble.

They will try to say that you cannot prove you havent abused the item in some way, but the onus in on them to prove you have.

I have taken back many things well out of warranty and got free replacements doing this. For example, a 2 year warranty on a fridge freeze expires you can still take the item back up to 10 years later because to be 'fit for purpose' it is suppose to last around 10 years. There is some discretion on the definition of fit for purpose (it depends on the item), but many people do not realise you can do this.

If the company refuses a call to trading standard usually gets them in line.

Really?

I snapped mine last year. Tried to get a replacement from Rencarparts on various occasions but nothing worked out!

Absolutely. This is why Renault have recalled the Mk2 bonnet catches. Under UK law they must be fit for purpose and are expected to last the life of the car. Out of warranty, but they have a legal obligation to fix them. Why would a jack be any different?

That's a useful piece of information. They refused to even check their computer to see if my bonnet catch needed replacing though, and when I told them that a Renault specialist had said it has never been changed and needed doing they accused me of making it up.

That's the attitude of my local Renault dealer unfortunately.

When you deal with companies like Renault you have to understand you are dealing with faceless corporations. Everyone tries to cover their backs and pass responsibility to someone else. I would first ask politely but firmly at the relevant desk, and if you get nowhere simply ask to see the most senior member of staff in the building. Then explain that you know your rights, have checked the law and are exercising those rights.

If they still refuse to play ball, explain you will take the matter up with trading standards, and if this process costs money, will then put in a claim to the small claims court to cover the costs. If they refuse to help. ask for a written statement of refusal. If they wont give you one, tell then you are writing down their refusal to put this is writing.

If they wont play ball simply phone trading standard and file a report. Always take down everyone's name (write it down there and then), and jot down the rough time.

Remeber the guy at the front desk is just some guy, hes not a lawyer and doesnt know the law. Dont give him any s**t, as it will just make him less likely to help.

Everything sold in the UK must be fit for purpose. If my steering wheel had melted i would be currently back in Renault demanding a replacement, as melting steering wheels are not fit for purpose. There is also a safety issue regarding this IMO.

Remember, everyone is subject to the same laws. Laws of trading apply equally to the smallest firm and the largest corporation. Everyone musrt follow them.
