Swapping new front tyres with rears.

Visited a few garages today and best I could get was £165.00 for two new exaltos fitted which I thought was quite good. When i get them fitted should I ask them to put my worn rears on the front and put my new exaltos on the back - also should i expect them to charge me extra for doing this as would be like fitting four new tyres or not!?

Pointless changing back to front and all that...

It just means your going to need another set of fronts in the near future...remember its a front drive car so the fronts should really have the better tyres IMO..

I've read a couple of articles on this and it's best just to run fronts vs rears. don't bother swapping worn tyres to the rear as it makes the rear more unstable at speed/braking. Basically the rear needs better tyre tread depth to cope with the forces as the back of the car is being trailered. skidding/drift is more likely under extreme use.

If you just use the car around town then swap away. Sell the used/low tyres to a member who will use them for trackdays etc

like me :)

reason i ask is that someone on here said they had more grip on the front then one day in rainy conditions they broke hard and the back up spun came out?

Edde swears by putting the best tyres on the front.

By that I don't think you are supposed to change the tyres over alone, just change the wheels over with the tyres on.

so ur saying its better to have more grip on the back!?

Deffo easier to swap wheels. And cheaper.

Yeah, the rationale behind it is - more grip at the back, so more chance of the front staying in front of the back.

Thats just daft, Best tyres on the back. The logic is simple, worn front tyres, when there grip is lost will just wash out, lift of the accelerator till grip is gained. Worn rears will cause a spin, as the fronts grip and the backs wash out. If you are going round a right hand bend, you will end up in the wrong lane.

Does anyone know how much difference in grip there is between a new set of tyres and a part-worn set with,say,3mm left?

should i just ask the tyrefitters to swap the tyres for me or are you meant to swap the wheel with the tyre on??

new tyres on the rear, more grip is needed there, exactly as G F says

Put it this way, i change mine when they reach the 3mm stage, on the advise of my traffic cop uncle.

Traffic cops swap tyres over all the time, to try and keep the same level of grip on all four tyres, then change all four at the same time.

all new (car) tyres come with 8mm of tread from new as for putting new tyres on the front the best tyres should be put on the rear of the car for handling and brakeing and its my company policy to put new tyres on the rear unless they are different sizes front to back hope it helps

Thats what l do.Just swapped my fronts to the back etc and get much less understeer in the wet.Use to do this on my 205gti and never had any problems.....and we know how bad they are for lift-off oversteer !

Best tyres on the back all the time.

And that means just swop the alloys round not to take the tyres off the allosy and swop them etc.
