Tap Tap Tap

  UR R26R.5, VW Golf R
Just an update on this, it was (and still is) tapping, but has been diagnosed as being the hydraulic lifters (tappets) by both my local garage and Renault. Some days it's louder than others.

Got a quote to have them replaced by Renault : £1340. Yes. I think I'll give that one a miss. That included the tappets, camshaft kit and labour.

I know I can get a set of tappets for £150 rather than going down the dealer price route, but it's the labour of fitting them and replacing the cambelt etc. that's the major headache.

Do I need to get a camshaft kit, too? They're around £400 and the car only had it's belts changed a little over 12 months ago. I know it's still 7 or 8 hours labour for fitting the tappets but bloody hell if I can reduce the price of the parts I don't necessarily need that's at least a bonus. My local garage said they can replace the tappets for £450 (so around 9 hours labour). That doesn't include the price of the parts, obviously.

Thoughts?

Go and see a specialist first before you get anything done, it will be much cheaper than renault and a better job dont know who's close to you but thats what i would do.

KTEC said around £750 all in for tappet replacement. However, would that be without the camshaft kit?

I don't even know if I need a camshaft kit.

Meh.

Unless they are replacing the rockers aswell then you shouldnt really need the cams, and for £1340 i doubt they are replacing them as i recal them being around £40-50 each last time i bought one. Get the cams checked, one might have a crack in the lobe.

Have a word with paul RS tuning leeds you will need both belts doing aux and cam if it is the tappets, but get it looked at first might not be them and Ktec is miles away from you there's more specicalist closer

They can do it for around £700. That's basically tappets and cambelt. An aux belt on top of that would be another £130 or so, for peace of mind, but like I said it was only done a year or so ago. The engineer said I shouldn't need a camshaft kit and that's just Renault putting it on the quote for more money. So, for cambelt, tappets, aux belt and dephaser, it would be £1040. But I only need the tappets and cambelt.

The car has only done 33k miles and is tip top to drive other than the tapping which is actually pretty quiet today.

Will do mate, but the fact Renault have checked it and confirmed it's one tappet/lifter makes me think they're probably right.

It's not mis-firing or causing any problems at all.

Will certainly give it a go, though, cheers.

i hate these threads people start up, telling you the problem, so you read each page and you get to the end, and they never get back to say what was wrong with the car, :banghead: its like reading a book and some fcuker has ripped the last page out, aaaahhhhhh.

theres hundreds of threads like this on here,

aaahh i'm off to bed.

Sounds like a sticky tappet, not the end of the world. Live with it or replace if it really pisses you off!
