Tapping noise from engine and pulley movement

Hi all,

Just in the middle of changing my spark plugs on my 197. The cars just under 36k

Got the 1st plug out (the plug next to the oil filler cap)

However, the plug has oil on it and the tip is a black colour. 100_0274.jpg100_0273.jpg

So I checked the other plugs and there is no oil. But the tip is still the matte black colour...

Any ideas or should i change the plugs and see how it goes?

Re: Spark plug infomation

oil will most likely be a leaking rocker cover, which is a cambelt off job to fix IF it is that.

plugs look like you've taken them out after running the engine but not getting it hot before turning off

Re: Spark plug infomation

Thanks for the information 519.

I shall wait till Tuesday (that's when it's booked in) and il see what they say.

Re: Oil in Spark plug hole / oil leak / engine tapping

Thought i would take a few videos when the car is cold / warm and fully up to temp.

This noise has been going on for a while now. I have been back to the dealers regarding engine component noise. But they did not mention any problems.

Cold

Warm

Up to temp

Car is going into the dealers this morning.

Spark plug / oil / tapping - dealer help!

Update 2. Just had a phone call from the dealer.

1. They could not fault the car.

2. The tapping noise is the normal noise from the injectors.

3. The Oil leak picture above, is just sweating. They have torqued up the bolts on the cam cover.

4. I spoke to them about a knocking noise coming from the foot well of drivers side. (when the car is cold and you lift of the accelerator in 2nd / 3rd gear) Nope could not see anything wrong with it.

5. Did not even mention the spark plugs and the oil that the car went in for in the first place!

I asked the person I spoke to on the phone, if i could hear another 197 / 200 they have in their forecourt. Hopefully i will have time to do that this evening.

Failing that could someone post up a vid of their standard 197 / 200 engine sound?

Matt

Re: Spark plug infomation

Well went down to the dealer.

Spoke to the tech that worked on my car. When i asked him about the spark plug / oil problem it came in for. He look very confused.

To cut a long story short: He had not got a clue about it. I had to point out what the problem was!

Renault Dealer in question: What a bunch of liars!

Re: Spark plug infomation

get a report from "someone" ie a specialist and go back and nail them with it, or at least get a second opinion

Main dealers "generally" don't get to see as many Renaultsports as us specialists do!

although there's nothing abnormal about your car really, it is a Renault!

Thank Fred. So from your opinion the noise above from the 3 videos are normal?

It will be going into two techs in Dartford on the 28th.

Re: Spark plug infomation

Have you had any messages appear on the dash like "injection fault" or "anti-pollution fault"? I ask cos the 197/200 is getting common for the cam position sensor which causes a loud tick similar to injectors... CLIP time will confirm this. That pulley movement doesn't look right though.

Hi Mick,

Thank you for tacking the time to post.

I have not had any messages appear on the dash, since the ticking started.

The pulley movement i only just noticed. I Presume it should not have side to side movement? Could it have something to do with this noise?.. -

Any way. Renault Orpington got back to RUK.

Orpington said:

1. The tapping noise above is perfectly normal. 100%
2. The fault with the spark / plug oil - They could not see any oil down the plug oils. It would of drained out when I first took it out on the Saturday)
3. Knocking noise they could not find...

I
have it booked into "two techs" on the 28th so il get them to check it.

I have tired to get a better video of the pulley. I can see there is lateral movement on the belt

Yeah the belt is walking a little... maybe incorrect belt tension but let 2Techs do their job and sort it mate. I hear very good things about them.

Hi all,

I know this thread is old, but my car got exactly the same ticking noise like in this video.

I wonder if someone can tell me where the problem is, I am getting it checked next week,

Thx in advance.
