Tappy Engine

  182 in white
Evening all,

I have a 182 and recently i have been hearing a tappy noise from the engine, not really there from cold only when the engines warm. I have gone thru the search function listening to others noises that they have posted up in the past but none really sound like mine.
I changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago in the hope it might of quietened it down but it hasnt (using miller 5/40 fully synth oil).
Tonight i also done a oil pressure check and found at idle when warm it was running at nearly 2bar and when at 3k its running over 5bar which sounds good to me. The noise seems to be at its loudest around/inbetween cylinders 2 and 3, do the cams wear on these engines?
The noise is more apparent at over 2000rpm . .over 3000rpm the noise is generally drowned out by the exhaust and v6 airbox. in the last 6000 miles its had a full cambelt kit and aux belt kit fitted but no dephaser was fitted.
I noticed alot of people say if its the dephaser then its generally under 2000rpm but this noise seems more noiticable above 2000rpm. I have also re-checked the tightness of the plugs and all is good and tight. Any suggestions? could it be dephaser?, can it casue noises in the middle of the engine if the dephasers is worn? anyone else had this experience before or is local to lend a ear or am i going to be at a loss untill its stripped down.

Thanks all and sorry for the long post! :rasp:

Dephaser is the most likely cause i'm afraid but this can be checked by a garage/specialist for a small fee before you have to spend out a wedge. Where are you based?

Gearbox side of cylinder head, remove the inlet camshaft end cap and see if you can rotate the camshaft slightly with ease... if you can its D-U-N

End caps are consumable items so be sure to have a new one to hand

Well i checked the play at the back of the cam and there is no more than 1mm of play, is that enough or acceptiable? and i wouldnt say it was with ease, i had to apply some pressure to move it? Could this be enough to cause the noise? the engine has done 130k?
Thanks

There shouldn't be any play at all mate... what did you use to 'work' the camshaft with? We normally use the setting bar itself as it fits perfectly and you can properly give it maximum chicken without the risk of damaging the locating boss.

Yeah i used the setting bar that you use to do the timing with. Looks like the dephaser is my first port of call then,

Thanks again for your help, some sound advise :star:
