Tell me about MK2 172's

  1996 Valver
Hi guys

I have been going on about selling my Valver and getting a Civic Type r.
I still like the idea of this but don't want a big debt hanging over my head:( .

I have been on autotrader today, and I saw a few MK2 172's for under £6k.
I am not too worried about higher mileage, especially as you guys say the engines 'free up' after a few miles.

My question is what kit do they have? Traction control, Cruise control, Trip computer, Xenon's?????

Also I know there is a CUP, But was there a CUP pack available as an option on the full fat models??

Thanks
Patrick:D

  BMW 330d :)
Cup spoiler pack but not suspension. You need the proper 172 for that ;) The cup!

Oh and the kit varies according to the year. The f/f mk2 172 will have the xenons and trip but not sure about the traction and cruise control.

Cheers

The cruise and t/c were on models after 03.Other than that you get all the goodies. The cup has the bigger spoiler but none of the goodies.Whichever you frefer is up to you.
The FF 172 certainly has more goodies than a type r and gives little away in performance

The only thing you need to know about Mk2 172s is that most of them come in silver! lol.

There were no cup packs for the 172s, they were only available on the 182s.

Thanks for all your help guys, One question though?
What is the f/f???

f/f = full fat (cliosport nickname) = it has aircon, leather, xenons, ABS etc

the 172cup has none of the toys on board, its just a basic clio shell with a big engine

Thanks mate, should of guested that relay.

Did you go (still go) to the engineering college in Bicester?

Hi pat

Let me know if you decide to get a 172, I've got a mint one with only 14k miles on it and 9 months warranty left. Plus i'm looking to get a blue ph2 valver when I sell up. We may be able to do a deal. Pm me for more details.

One big theing no-one's mentioned about mk2 172s - the 172 Cup doesn't have ABS. That's one thing to bear in mind if you're looking around. The FF does have all the toys but it marginally slower because of the extra weight from the toy count. For me, I wanted the toys but more importantly wanted ABS.

Yeah thanks mate, I have no probs with no ABS but its the rest of the stuff I want.

I may consider a CUP,Will see how things go.

You could look for a rare cup with climate. There are a few around on here that i know of,but not many.
It would help with the long hot 2 weeks of summer we have each year...lol

i got a 172 cup with c/c and having no abs isnt really that much of a issue! ive only locked the wheels a couple of times when it was raining hard and on ice! but the lack of toys isnt that bad.

Nice spec

Personal preference when it comes to cup/full fat versions

Cruise Control was added to cars from September 2003. So 53 plate onwards. All Mk2 172's have ESP, but it only became switchable from 03 iirc.

So basically you'll be very lucky to get a mk2 172 with switchable ESP and Cruise for less than 7k, never mind 6K!!

Thats what makes it such a compelling car ;) If you are going to make a hot hatch you may as well make it as raw and as exciting as you can ;)

I know what you are saying, but is the CUP realy any quicker/better handling..in the real world?

I ride a motorbike aswell, so am used to having 'no toys'...........I may end up with a CUP and this is fine by me, But I would prefer toys, just for the sake of it.

What type of money are CUP's starting from??

And of course Cheap...... Which is why so many numbnuts drive them and they end up a ditch. ;)

Numbnuts eh? ;) I've had my car for just over 2 years and havent had a scratch! Its about being sensible on the road and driving to the conditions!

I admit it, I ain't 'core enough for a Cup  And I had the chance to buy one too...

When I was looking for a 172 I had the choice of:

(a) a pre-reg (4 months old) 53-plate 172 Cup with delivery mileage
or
(b) a brand new 04-plate imported full fat 172

both for the same price.

I chose option b :)

I'd say the cup is more snappy than the f/f 172 but thats what gives me the extra buzz when driving it. Round a track with the same driver it would be faster but like you said on a road there wouldnt be anything in it. Up to 1/2 sec quicker to 60mph but again it depends on the driver and the car.

I just prefer the way the cup looks and it doesnt bother me that it doesnt have all the toys, it makes me more special to me that it has been honed and improved from the std 172.

Both nice cars though and wouldnt mind owning either of them. I guess its a personal choice as always.

Cheers

The annual winter CKC (Cup Kill Campaign) has been rather quiet this winter compared with last year *touch wood*

As long as you are careful then your cup will survive the winter. Oh and that applies to v6's as I've heard some nasty stories about some of them recently.

So the CUP 172, was this only available in Blue, not a prob as I am quite fond of it, The wheels are different, but cosmetically are there any other differences?
Oh and apart from the front+rear spoilers???

  BMW 330d :)
There are a few differences. First there was a ltd edition 172 cup in silver which had climate control. There are a couple of them on here. The rest of them came in special blue. (Mondial I think). The cups have a wider track, lowered suspension (not by much), no air con to save weight, added front splitter and rear spoiler, no side airbags, no abs, no traction control, no xenons, no engine cover, speedline turini wheels which i think look nice, no spare wheel, no rear headrests, no leather, less sound deadening and thinner glass panels to save weight. All these changes saved approx 90kg on the f/f model. Phew! I think that is most of the differences! I could be corrected though.

So that should answer your question! ;)

In short it may be lacking the creature comforts of the f/f but I think thats what makes it special. (Well to me anyway!)

Just found this; quite a good review and highlights the differences between 172 and CUP

I dont think it will cost you too much less. Maybe up to a grand on a similar f/f car. Or it might be more as it is the special lightweight version! Depends on the sellers view. And remember that the 172 cup is the lightest out of all the varients of 172/182/trophy. ;)

I'll try and get a hi-res pic up of my car later so you can make your mind up ;)
