Temp gauge sitting above 1/2 constantly?

  2002 172
So my temp gauge is sitting one line above half way. From reading online I think it should be on half way?

It steadily gets up to temp when driving and doesn’t fluctuate.

So any reasons why it would be sitting at this point instead of half way?

Thermostat stuck shut or a faulty temp sensor would be my guess

Sorry maybe I should have put in the title, it goes down to cold when the engine is off and rises steadily when the engine is warming in the morning.

Sounds pretty normal to me other than it sitting above half way, all the ones I've drove sit bang on half.

Am I missing something here?

It will drop to the bottom with the engine off. As the engine warms up it will steadily rise.
Turn a hot engine off and back on it will go straight back to half way.

I understand how it should work, but I’m wondering why mine is sitting on the next line above halfway. So effectively running too hot?

Are we discussing a KIA Sportage?

Well like I said in my first post the first thing it could be is the thermostat is sticking shut or part shut not allowing water through to the radiator so the engine is running hotter than it should.

One of these two?

Cheers for the replies chaps!

I’ll just keep an eye on it then. Will be having the bumper off soon to fit the headlight washers so can check the radiator then. I’ll give it a brush and hose down, if needed!

think my 182 to sits there and my 172 and 172 track car both sit dot on half, I don't worry about it unless as other have said it wildly fluctuates or keeps rising to red
